New-generation adsorbent, Fe3O4@SiO2/GO, was developed by modification of graphene oxide (GO) with silica-coated (SiO2) magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4). The synthesized adsorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The developed adsorbent was used for the removal and simultaneous preconcentration of As(III) and As(V) from environmental waters prior to ICP-MS analysis. Fe3O4@SiO2/GO provided high adsorption capacities, i.e., 7.51 and 11.46 mg g−1 for As(III) and As(V), respectively, at pH 4.0. Adsorption isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic were investigated for As(III) and As(V) adsorption. Preconcentration of As(III) and As(V) were studied using magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method at pH 9.0 as the adsorbent showed selective adsorption for As(III) only in pH range 7–10. MSPE using Fe3O4@SiO2/GO was developed with good linearities (0.05–2.0 ng mL−1) and high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9992 and 0.9985) for As(III) and As(V), respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) (3× SD/m, n = 3) obtained were 7.9 pg mL−1 for As(III) and 28.0 pg mL−1 for As(V). The LOD obtained is 357–1265× lower than the WHO maximum permissible limit of 10.0 ng mL−1. The developed MSPE method showed good relative recoveries (72.55–109.71 %) and good RSDs (0.1–4.3 %, n = 3) for spring water, lake, river, and tap water samples. The new-generation adsorbent can be used for the removal and simultaneous preconcentration of As(III) and As(V) from water samples successfully. The adsorbent removal for As(III) is better than As(V).

Development of magnetic graphene oxide adsorbent for the removal and preconcentration of As(III) and As(V) species from environmental water samples

This review covers publications from the second half of 2016 to the middle of 2017. Techniques and applications relevant to clinical and biological materials, foods and beverages are discussed in the text, presenting the key aspects of the work referenced, while the tables provide a summary of the publications considered. Further to the observations made in the 2017 Update, we have noted the increase in publications featuring nanomaterials. Topics relate to exposure and absorption of nanoparticles; potential toxicity, use as reagents in analytical methods and the analysis or characterisation of these materials. A growing number of techniques are being applied to bio-imaging. In particular, those involving XRF spectrometry are being applied to a large range of biological sample types. A gradual trend during recent years, that is now quite apparent, has been the increasing proportion of publications that involve foods and beverages compared with clinical samples. Not necessarily related, but another trend is the growing number of reports from laboratories in the Republic of China.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a bio-accumulative plant for arsenic (As), particularly the most toxic inorganic As species (i-As), and the main contributor to i-As intake among agricultural products. The analytical process for determination and speciation of As in rice is complex. Different aspects have to be considered, including detection method, calibration strategy, sample-treatment and preparation procedures, and quality assurance and quality control of results. It is well known that sample preparation is a critical step in the whole analytical chain, so this review surveys achievements in analysis of rice for the content of total As and the species of As reported in the past 15 years using spectrochemical techniques. We discuss different sample-preparation procedures, with their advantages and drawbacks. We highlight common strategies and alternative approaches to speciation analysis of As.

Comparison of strategies for sample preparation prior to spectrometric measurements for determination and speciation of arsenic in rice

Carbon dots doped with N/Ce, N/Eu and N/Tb were prepared by a microwave based hydrothermal technique. The fluorescence of the N/Ce co-doped carbon dots (CDN/Ce) is strongest. They have excitation/emission maxima at 340/441 nm. CDN/Ce was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, infrared and fluorescence spectroscopy. On addition of the nucleic acid aptamer (Apt) against arsenic(III) in pH 7 solution, the blue fluorescence of the doped carbon dots is partially quenched due to electrostatic interaction. On addition of As(III), it will bind to the aptamer, and the carbon dots are released. Hence, fluorescence becomes gradually restored. In addition, the resonance Rayleigh scattering signal (measured at 340 nm) is reduced. This dual-mode assay works in the 0.5–5.8 μg·L−1 As(III) concentration range and has a 0.2 μg·L−1 detection limit.

This study focused on the development of a gaseous ClO2 treatment system that contained dry ice that was used to form carbon dioxide (CO2) and an absorbent pad with sodium chlorite (NaClO2) solution for ClO2 gas generation. Furthermore, the effects of ClO2 gas on the populations of Listeria monocytogenes and the quality properties of table grapes during cold storage were evaluated. The system continuously released the sufficient concentrations of ClO2 gas to treat berries during 30 d of cold storage. After 20 h of ClO2 gas treatment, the populations of Listeria monocytogenes decreased from 5.88 log CFU/g to a non-detectable (ND) level. There were no significant (p > 0.05) changes in the color parameters (L*, a*, and b*) of table grapes treated with ClO2 gas. The firmness, weight, total soluble solids (TSS), and titratable acid (TA) losses of table grapes were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced by ClO2 gas, while Vitamin C was unaffected. Additionally, the residual ClO2 of table grapes were <0.5 mg/kg, which is considered a safe level. Overall, the novel gaseous ClO2 treatment system may be used as an effective intervention technology to improve the safety and quality of table grapes during cold storage.
