The opportunities of mass customization are acknowledged as fundamentally positive by theoretical and empirical studies for many years. Many companies are already operating on this new business model successfully. But most of them are rather small start-ups which utilize the novelty effect of mass customization to enter mature markets. Large scale mass customization operations are still limited to a few examples. The objective of this paper is to analyze the recent state of mass customization practice by answering four basic questions which are frequently raised by managers and scholars when talking about the challenges of this approach: Do customers need customized products? If yes, what prevents them from purchasing these offerings? Do we have the enabling technologies for mass customization? And why do many firms fail during and after the introduction of mass customization? To answer these questions, this paper develops twelve propositions. These refer to terminological problems, a shortage of reliable information about the real demand for customized products in various markets, the state of implementation of configuration technologies, lack of management knowledge about organizational and strategic capabilities of mass customization operations, and the demand for sincere change management activities. These issues may explain why the present state of practical implementation of mass customization lacks behind the description and discussion of the phenomenon in the management literature.

Collaboration is a recent trend in supply chain management (SCM) that focuses on joint planning, coordination, and process integration between suppliers, customers, and other partners in a supply chain. Its competitive benefits include cost reductions and increased return on assets, and increased reliability and responsiveness to market needs. Recent advances in inter‐enterprise software and communication technologies, along with a growing use of strategic partnering and outsourcing relationships, has resulted in a confusing assortment of alternative information systems approaches for supporting collaborative SCM. This paper analyzes the alternatives and presents a framework for understanding the expected costs and benefits of each type of system. These costs include not only the total cost of ownership of the system, but also the partnership opportunity cost – the cost of being tied to a partner due to system inflexibility. The benefits of collaborative SCM include process, inventory, and product cost reductions as well as increased cycle times, service levels, and market intelligence.

Supply chain collaboration alternatives: understanding the expected costs and benefits

Auctions are a fundamental mechanism to automating negotiations in electronic commerce. We investigate multi-attribute auctions, an economic mechanism, which automates negotiation on multiple attributes of a deal. In this approach, we combine decision analysis techniques and single-sided auction mechanisms in order to procure goods and services. The paper describes an experimental analysis of multi-attribute auctions. First, we will provide an overview of the preliminary game-theoretical and simulation results. Then we will introduce a Web-based implementation of the mechanism and describe the design and the results of an experiment analyzing the economic behavior of multi-attribute auction formats. In the experiment, the utility scores achieved in multi-attribute auctions were significantly higher than those of single-attribute auctions. The efficiency was similar in single-attribute and multi-attribute auctions, and we did not find evidence for revenue equivalence between the multi-attribute auction formats.

An experimental analysis of multi-attribute auctions

Behavior or Appearance? This is fundamental problem in robot development. Namely, not only the behavior but also the appearance of a robot influences human-robot interaction. There is, however, no research approach to tackling this problem. In order to state the problem, we have developed an android robot that has similar appearance as humans and several actuators generating micro behaviors. This paper proposes a new research direction based on the android robot.
