The Tall Poppy Syndrome (TPS) of knocking high achievers is often described as being ingrained in New Zealand's culture. This study interviews 40 entrepreneurs to explore how TPS impacts on entrepreneurs. Internationally, New Zealand is considered to be a highly entrepreneurial country. Thus TPS and an entrepreneurial culture appear to co-exist. Over half of the participants had experienced TPS in their role as entrepreneurs and their individual strategies for managing its impact included 'staying under the radar', not telling people they owned a business and not ‘flaunting’ their wealth. This study suggests that the effects of TPS may have significant implications for entrepreneurship in New Zealand. Firstly, TPS may discourage entrepreneurs from starting a business. Secondly, people who have experienced a business failure may be reluctant to establish another business because of the public reaction to their 'fall'. Finally, entrepreneurs may deliberately limit business growth because they don't want to attract attention. Potential ways of reducing the impact of TPS on entrepreneurs include celebrating entrepreneurial success more visibly, highlighting realistic role models for people to aspire to and emphasising the hard work and risk that entrepreneurs take to achieve success.

Tall Poppy Syndrome: Implications for entrepreneurship in New Zealand

In recent times, there has been a shift in the management literature toward embracing spirituality in the workplace. Much of this literature promulgates the idea that spiritual individuals are moral and therefore, valuable ethical assets to any organization. However, there is negligible research validating this claim. As part of a larger study, this research investigated how spirituality influenced ethical behavior in a variety of work contexts. This was based on a critical realist methodology, semi-structured interviews with 31 highly spiritual cases and a thematic analysis of 80 ethical incidents. It found participants’ spirituality was manifested through an awareness of others that guided and enabled them to act in authentically ethical ways that transcended organizational conditions. Using Integrative Propositional Analysis for Evaluating Entrepreneurship Theories

Rapid technological innovations are currently occurring in higher education with differential effects on academics, students and ICT. This article, through literature review and author experiences, highlights the potential misperceptions of gender and related learning styles resulting from increased adoption of ICT in higher education. The authors emphasise the need for a collaborative approach between educators, learners, and the people and organisations that drive technological innovation, which contrasts the competitive forces that now abound. The authors also acknowledge the implied positions in dialogues about gender. One response is to initiate understanding at the strategic level and utilise the advances in ICT technologies that enhance connectedness in the educational experience. To improve the education of entrepreneurial managers and leaders, future policies must address the effects and accessibility of online education to meet employer and global technological requirements with equitable outcomes.

Entrepreneurial success is open to wide variance in interpretation, given it is a social construct. Theory regarding what constitutes entrepreneurial success is explored using case studies of the 2003 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award winners in Australia and New Zealand. Findings suggest the need to emphasize what theory presents as key elements of successful entrepreneurship, and importantly, incorporate ethics as a key dimension. Further, the analysis offers insight into how business awards processes in general, might be conducted.
