Building Natural History Collections for the Twenty-First Century and Beyond
Sara E. Miller,Lisa N. Barrow,Sean M. Ehlman,Jessica A. Goodheart,Jessica A. Goodheart,Stephen E. Greiman,Holly L. Lutz,Holly L. Lutz,Tracy M. Misiewicz,Stephanie M. Smith,Milton Tan,Christopher J. Thawley,Christopher J. Thawley,Joseph A. Cook,Jessica E. Light +14 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide recommendations and guidelines for scientists to support NHCs, focusing particularly on new users that may be unfamiliar with collections, and hope that this perspective will motivate debate on the future of NHC and the role of the scientific community in maintaining and improving biological collections.
The importance of environmental heterogeneity and spatial distance in generating phylogeographic structure in edaphic specialist and generalist tree species of Protium (Burseraceae) across the Amazon Basin
Paul V. A. Fine,Felipe Zapata,Douglas C. Daly,Italo Mesones,Tracy M. Misiewicz,Hillary F. Cooper,Hillary F. Cooper,Carlos Eduardo A. Barbosa +7 more
TL;DR: This work compared the phylogeographic structure across the geographic distribution of twoProtium(Burseraceae) species with different degrees of edaphic specialization to predict the structure of populations in these species in the Amazon.

Anthropogenic Burning on the Central California Coast in Late Holocene and Early Historical Times: Findings, Implications, and Future Directions
Kent G. Lightfoot,Rob Q. Cuthrell,Cristie M. Boone,Roger Byrne,Andreas S. Chavez,Laurel Collins,Alicia Cowart,Rand R. Evett,Paul V. A. Fine,Diane Gifford-Gonzalez,Mark G. Hylkema,Valentin Lopez,Tracy M. Misiewicz,Rachel E.B. Reid +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the results of the eco-archaeological project were summarized and five research questions concerning anthropogenic burning on the central California coast in Late Holocene and early historical times were addressed.

Exploring the links between secondary metabolites and leaf spectral reflectance in a diverse genus of Amazonian trees
Paul V. A. Fine,Diego Salazar,Roberta E. Martin,Margaret R. Metz,Tracy M. Misiewicz,Gregory P. Asner +5 more
TL;DR: A new integrative approach that combines visible-to-shortwave infrared (VSWIR) spectral reflectance data with detailed plant metabolomics data from 19 Protium (Burseraceae) tree species finds that the integration of spectral and metabolic approaches could represent a powerful and economical method to characterize important aspects of tropical plant defense chemistry.

Phylogeny, biogeography and character evolution of dorstenia (moraceae)
TL;DR: This work presents the first molecular phylogeny and the first evolutionary study to examine origin and diversification within Dorstenia, and inferred the phylogeny with ITS sequence data using Bayesian and maximum likelihood approaches.
