Silvicultural alternatives to conventional even-aged forest management - what limits global adoption?
Klaus J. Puettmann,Scott McG Wilson,Susan C. Baker,Pablo J. Donoso,Lars Drössler,Girma Amente,Brian D. Harvey,Thomas Knoke,Yuanchang Lu,Susanna Nocentini,Francis E. Putz,Toshiya Yoshida,Jürgen Bauhus +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a compilation of the authors' experiences and perspectives from various parts of the world aims to initiate a larger discussion concerning the constraints to and the potential of adopting alternative silvicultural practices.

Factors influencing early vegetation establishment following soil scarification in a mixed forest in northern Japan
TL;DR: Maintenance of canopy cover proved to be most important in promoting plant species diversification on the scarification site, and extreme environmental conditions led to the domi- nance of grasses, forbs, and lianas rather than tall trees.
Forest stand structure, composition, and dynamics in 34 sites over Japan
Masae Iwamoto Ishihara,Satoshi N. Suzuki,Masahiro Nakamura,Tsutomu Enoki,Akio Fujiwara,Tsutom Hiura,Kosuke Homma,Daisuke Hoshino,Kazuhiko Hoshizaki,Hideyuki Ida,Ken Ishida,Akira Itoh,Takayuki Kaneko,Kaname Kubota,Koichiro Kuraji,Shigeo Kuramoto,Akifumi Makita,Takashi Masaki,Kanji Namikawa,Kaoru Niiyama,Mahoko Noguchi,Haruto Nomiya,Tatsuhiro Ohkubo,Satoshi Saito,Takeshi Sakai,Michinori Sakimoto,Hitoshi Sakio,Hirofumi Shibano,Hisashi Sugita,Mitsuo Suzuki,Atsushi Takashima,Nobuyuki Tanaka,Naoaki Tashiro,Naoko Tokuchi,Toshiya Yoshida,Yumiko Yoshida +35 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report tree census data collected in a network of 34 forest sites in Japan and provide species abundance, survivorship and stem girth growth of 52,534 individuals of 334 tree and liana species.

Factors influencing the distribution of two co-occurring dwarf bamboo species ( Sasa kurilensis and S. senanensis ) in a conifer-broadleaved mixed stand in northern Hokkaido
Mahoko Noguchi,Toshiya Yoshida +1 more
TL;DR: The effects of physical environment and overstory conditions, working through the dominance of the two dwarf bamboo species, should be taken into account in understanding the dynamics of natural forests in this region.

Twenty years of community dynamics in a mixed conifer broad-leaved forest under a selection system in northern Japan
Toshiya Yoshida,Mahoko Noguchi,Yukio Akibayashi,Masato Noda,Masahiko Kadomatsu,Kaichiro Sasa +5 more
TL;DR: Examination of demographic parameters of major tree species during a 20-year study of a 68 ha stand in which single-tree selection has been conducted since 1971 showed that growth and survival of conifers was the most strongly positively affected, suggesting their decreased dominance over the longer term.
