COIL development in Japan

A jet-type singlet oxygen generator based on a gas-liquid chemical reaction yielding singlet oxygen, O2(1Δ g), for pumping the supersonic chemical oxygen-iodine laser was investigated. In addition to O2(1Δ g) and residual chlorine concentrations, a content of water formed during O2(1Δ g) generation was estimated (because of its detrimental effect on lasing) in gas flowing from the generator to the laser active region. The experimental conditions were determined under which an effect of liquid droplets escaping from the generator was negligible, and accordingly, a content of water vapour was suppressed to a value corresponding to the saturated water vapour pressure. It was also proved that a reduction in the relative water content, and a consequent increase in the laser output power, could be achieved by increasing peroxide and hydroxide concentration in the generator liquid, and by decreasing a liquid temperature and a total pressure in the generator.

Performance Characteristics of Jet-type Generator of Singlet Oxygen for Supersonic Chemical Oxygen-Iodine Laser*1

The characteristics of a high‐pressure pulsed singlet oxygen generator is investigated. This generator was designed for the energy source of new pulsed chemical lasers. A ceramic porous pipe is devised in it to attain the high‐pressure pulsed operation. New methods were developed to measure a water vapor pressure and a reaction efficiency in the pulsed singlet oxygen generator system. The maximum singlet oxygen pressure obtained was 35 Torr, and the estimated initial excitation efficiency was 70%–80%

Performance characteristics of a high‐pressure pulsed singlet oxygen generator

A twenty-years of COIL researches and developments in Japan are reviewed. The researches of four major sites, namely, Keio University, Industrial Research Institute, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Tokai University are presented in order of time. Epoch-making works are highlighted, and the significance of those works in the industrial COIL development is discussed, Finally, current status of COIL researches in Japan is introduced.

History of COIL development in Japan: 1982-2002

A pulsed iodine laser driven by a chemical oxygen generator was developed. The energy deposition on I(2P3/2) was made by a high‐pressure pulsed O2(a1Δg) generator. Although this scheme is the same as the conventional chemically pumped oxygen‐iodine laser (COIL), it is unique in that the pulsed laser was extracted by the high‐energy density pulsed pumping scheme. The pulse energy obtained was 1.34 J, the pulse width was 1.5 ms, and the peak power was 900 W. The specific energy was estimated to be 3.6 J/l.

The effect of water vapor on the operation of a chemical oxygen‐iodine laser without a water vapor trap is described. The maximum cw laser power of 87 W was obtained without the water vapor trap at a Cl2 flow rate of 740 mmol/min. An alkaline H2 O2 solution (90 wt. % H2 O2 , 50 wt. % KOH) was cooled down to about −30 °C in order to control the saturated H2 O2 ‐H2 O vapor pressure less than 100 mTorr. Two porous pipes made of carbon were utilized as a singlet oxygen generator.
