By comparing two-dimensional (2D) chemical animations designed for computer's desktop with three-dimensional (3D) chemical animations designed for the full immersive virtual reality environment CAVE^T^M we studied how virtual reality environments could raise student's interest and motivation for learning. By using the 3ds max^T^M, we can visualize the chemical phenomena easily and quickly without knowing any special computer language and export the application to files which are compatible with the CAVE^T^M (Object or OpenGL files). After the participation in 3D animations at the CAVE^T^M students comprehended the molecules' structure and their changes during a chemical reaction better than during the 2D animations on the computer's desktop, as the limitations of human vision had been overcome. Furthermore, the students were enthusiastic, as they had the feeling that they were inside the chemical reactions and they were facing the 3D molecules as if they were real objects front of them.

Full immersive virtual environment CAVETM in chemistry education

Virtual reality (VR) systems and the virtual environments (VEs) experienced within them have presented challenges to human computer interaction over many years. The sheer range of different interfaces which might be experienced and of different behaviours which might be exhibited have caused difficulties in general understanding of participants' performance within VR/VE and in providing coherent guidance for designers. We have recently completed a European Information Society Technologies (IST) project, Virtual and Interactive Environments for Workplaces of the Future (VIEW of the Future), which has made great strides in developing improved VR systems and interaction concepts and devices, based upon good understanding of participation in VEs. Particular emphasis in the VIEW of the Future project has been upon mobility and multiple active collaboration in use of VR/VE. This paper introduces a special issue devoted to this project and overviews the project as a whole. In doing so it also reviews some of the human factors issues defined for VR/VE over the years and the contribution of VIEW of the Future to addressing these.

In developing new personal electronic products, the development time has shortened to a few months due to high competition in the market. Now it has become very hard to meet the time to market by evaluating products by making physical prototypes. To overcome this problem, we propose an immersive modeling system (IMMS) that enables us to interact with a digital product model in the augmented virtual environment using a multi-modal interface. The IMMS allows the user to evaluate the product model realistically using visual, auditory, and tactile/force senses. The architecture and main modules of the system are described in detail. The integration problems encountered during the development of the test bed are discussed. Application examples to personal electronic products are also included.

Immersive modeling system (IMMS) for personal electronic products using a multi-modal interface

Three dimensional (3-D) visual immersive system provides a better experience of virtual or remote environments compared with 2-D vision and is thus becoming one of the most active research fields of virtual reality. This paper describes how a 3-D multimode visual immersive system (3DMVIS) is developed, including system architecture, triplet lens module, head orientation tracking circuit, display module, and sensor signal processing. It supports two operation modes for different applications, corresponding to different combinations of lens. As a portable head-mounted display (HMD) device, it can be used in extensive virtual reality and telepresence applications. In addition, this HMD provides visual accommodation with the aid of manual focus and compatibility with various types of 3-D videos. Hence, users with various levels of myopia can experience this facility without wearing glasses. Meanwhile, a typical application in telepresence is investigated along with a compact panoramic camera system. The 3DMVIS is tested and evaluated with various virtual reality scenes, standard-format 3-D movies, and real-world 360° panoramic videos. In addition, comparisons with other commercial counterparts are presented. Technical specification indicates that the 3DMVIS with its telepresence system satisfies the requirements of practical applications.
