Adsorption of rare earth metals from wastewater by nanomaterials: A review

Production of metals stands for 40% of all industrial greenhouse gas emissions, 10% of the global energy consumption, 3.2 billion tonnes of minerals mined, and several billion tonnes of by-products every year. Therefore, metals must become more sustainable. A circular economy model does not work, because market demand exceeds the available scrap currently by about two-thirds. Even under optimal conditions, at least one-third of the metals will also in the future come from primary production, creating huge emissions. Although the influence of metals on global warming has been discussed with respect to mitigation strategies and socio-economic factors, the fundamental materials science to make the metallurgical sector more sustainable has been less addressed. This may be attributed to the fact that the field of sustainable metals describes a global challenge, but not yet a homogeneous research field. However, the sheer magnitude of this challenge and its huge environmental effects, caused by more than 2 billion tonnes of metals produced every year, make its sustainability an essential research topic not only from a technological point of view but also from a basic materials research perspective. Therefore, this paper aims to identify and discuss the most pressing scientific bottleneck questions and key mechanisms, considering metal synthesis from primary (minerals), secondary (scrap), and tertiary (re-mined) sources as well as the energy-intensive downstream processing. Focus is placed on materials science aspects, particularly on those that help reduce CO2 emissions, and less on process engineering or economy. The paper does not describe the devastating influence of metal-related greenhouse gas emissions on climate, but scientific approaches how to solve this problem, through research that can render metallurgy fossil-free. The content is considering only direct measures to metallurgical sustainability (production) and not indirect measures that materials leverage through their properties (strength, weight, longevity, functionality).

The Materials Science behind Sustainable Metals and Alloys

End-of-life light-emitting diodes are electronic waste containing valuable and critical metals such as rare earth elements (REE) and gallium. These metals face the risk of supply disruption with increasing demand and the difficulty of their extraction and separation through mineral and metallurgical processing. Hence, this study aims to provide a descriptive insight into recovery techniques of light-emitting diodes (LED) waste using examples from other e-waste such as fluorescent lamps, liquid crystal displays, and LED production dust. An investigation was conducted following scoping searches, and a gap in research on LED recycling technologies was found. It was noticed that the possible technologies to recover gallium and REE from LED are physical processes, pyrolysis, bioleaching, and acid leaching, followed by purification processes such as solvent extraction and precipitation. The advantages and disadvantages of each method for industrial application were addressed in terms of efficiency in recovery of gallium and REE, selectivity, and energy consumption. Based on this analysis, hydrometallurgical processing has been identified as the most suitable method to recover gallium and REE from LEDs due to its high efficiency in recovering metals from low-grade secondary raw material. Despite the energy consumption, a first pyrometallurgical step is recommended for gallium recovery. Furthermore, the selection of recovery processes must be consistent with the light-emitting products due to differences in LEDs composition. Overall, the future perspective for LED recycling is to exploit the economic potential of this e-waste, aiming at a circular economy that enables the conservation of natural resources.

A review of the current progress in recycling technologies for gallium and rare earth elements from light-emitting diodes

In an era of environmental degradation, and water, and mineral scarcity, enhancing microbial function in sustainable mining has become a prerequisite for the future of the green economy. In recent years, the extensive use of rare earth elements (REEs) in green and smart technologies has led to an increase in the focus on recovery and separation of REEs from ore matrices. However, the recovery of REEs using traditional methods is complex and energy intensive, leading to the requirement to develop processes which are more economically feasible and environmentally friendly. The use of phosphate solubilizing microorganisms for bioleaching of REEs provides a biotechnical approach for the recovery of REEs from primary and secondary sources. However, managing and understanding the microbial-mineral interactions in order to develop a successful method for bioleaching of REEs still remains a major challenge. This review focuses on the use of microbes for the bioleaching of REEs and highlights the importance of genomic studies in order to narrow down potential microorganisms for the optimal extraction of REEs.

The balance between the market demand and the natural abundance of the rare-earth elements (REEs) in ores, often referred to as the Balance Problem (or the Balancing Problem), is a major issue for REE suppliers. The ideal situation is a perfect match between the market demand for and the production of REEs, so that there are no surpluses of any of the REEs. This means that the rare-earth industry must find new uses for REEs that are available in excess and search for substitutes for REEs that have either limited availability or are high in demand. We present an overview of the trends in the applications for the different REEs and show that the demand for REEs for use in magnets, catalysts, and alloys is still increasing, while the application of REEs in polishing agents, glass, and ceramics are stable. On the other hand, the use of REEs in nickel–metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries and lamp phosphors is decreasing. These changes in the REE market have an influence on the Balance Problem, because the REEs that can be recycled from fluorescent lamps, cathode-ray tubes (CRTs), and NiMH batteries have to be at least partly reused in other applications. Magnesium and aluminum alloys offer an opportunity to mitigate the Balance Problem caused by these changes in the REE market. This is illustrated for REEs that can be recycled from fluorescent-lamp phosphor waste, CRT phosphors, and NiMH batteries. At present, five REEs (Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy, and Y) are being considered as very critical by Europe, the United States, and Japan, but we forecast that in the medium term, only neodymium will remain a critical REE. This paper discusses the relationship between criticality and the Balance Problem and shows how this relationship influences the market for specific REEs.
