Recent developments in carbon dioxide utilization for the production of organic chemicals

While tremendous advances have been made in asymmetric synthesis, the resolution of racemates is still the most important industrial approach to the synthesis of chiral compounds. The use of enzymes for the kinetic resolution (KR) of racemic substrates to afford enantiopure compounds in high enantioselectivity and good yield has long been a popular strategy in synthesis. However, transition metal-mediated and more recently organocatalyzed KRs have gained popularity within the synthetic community over the last two decades due to the progress made in the development of chiral catalysts for asymmetric reactions. Many catalytic non-enzymatic procedures have been developed providing high enantioselectivity and yield for both products and recovered starting materials. Indeed, the non-enzymatic KR of racemic compounds based on the use of a chiral catalyst is presently an area of great importance in asymmetric organic synthesis. The goal of this review is to provide an update on the principal developments of catalytic non-enzymatic KR covering the literature since 2004. This review is subdivided into seven sections, according to the different types of compounds that have been resolved through catalytic non-enzymatic KR, such as alcohols, epoxides, amines, alkenes, carbonyl derivatives, sulfur compounds and ferrocenes.

Catalytic Non-Enzymatic Kinetic Resolution

Homogeneous catalysis employing carbon dioxide (CO2) as a carbon-based renewable feedstock has been and continues to be a flourishing area of research, providing new and improved synthetic methodologies towards a range of organic products. Since CO2 is inexpensive, non-toxic and available in virtually unlimited amounts, the progress in CO2 catalysis is of widespread academic, industrial and societal interest. This interest is sparked by the demanding necessity to provide viable alternatives for fossil fuel-derived organic precursors and their post-modification. Whereas most of the advances have been made in the area of CO2 conversion focusing on simple organic structures, the more challenging and gratifying stereoselective syntheses have only recently become a subject of increasing attention. This review therefore aims at presenting a concise overview of the most recent achievements in the field of stereoselective transformations where CO2 is used as a key reagent. As such, it should empower the synthetic community with a starting point for expansion of the toolbox leading to a greater variety of value-added organic matter based on CO2.

Stereoselective synthesis with carbon dioxide

The enantioselective chemical fixation of CO 2 into an epoxide was developed using an optically active ketoiminatocobalt(II) complex as a chiral Lewis acid. In the presence of a catalytic amount of the cobalt complex and amine base, enantioselective CO 2 fixation with an epoxide proceeded with kinetic resolution to afford the corresponding carbonate along with unreacted epoxide, both of which were optically active. To improve their enantioselectivities, the ligand structures of the cobalt complexes and amine bases were examined. Thus, the optimized catalytic system was successfully applied to various epoxides to obtain the corresponding optically active cyclic carbonates and to recover epoxides with good-to-high enantioselectivities.
