In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly accepted the 2030 Development Agenda, which has included 92 paragraphs, and the Paragraph 91 defined 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) and 169 associated targets. The goal of this paper is to discover the correlations among SDGs and information and communications technologies (ICTs). This paper discusses the roles and opportunities that ICTs play in pursuing the SDGs. We identify a number of research gaps to those three pillars, social, economic, and environmental perspectives, of sustainable development. After extensive literature reviews on the SDG-related research initiatives and activities, we find that the majority of contributions to SDGs recognized by the IEEE and ACM research communities have mainly focused on the technical aspects while there are lack of the holistic social good perspectives. Therefore, there are essential and urgent needs to raise the awareness and call for attentions on how to innovate and energize ICTs in order to best assist all nations to achieve the SDGs by 2030.

This article describes the design and development of a context-aware ubiquitous learning (u-learning) system for users to increase fitness-related reading comprehension in a fitness centre. With the use of mobile devices and sensing technologies, practitioners and researchers of ICT and ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) are paying attention to the planning and use of u-learning components to provide users more interactions with authentic learning objects in a real context. Meanwhile, English for specific purposes (ESP) with interaction design has been a focus in recent years; however, few ESP practitioners and researchers have explored fitness-related English with ubicomp. Designing dynamic English: a creative reading system in a context-aware fitness centre using a smart phone and QR codes

How may we best utilize mobile augmented reality for storytelling when reconstructing historical events onlocation? In this article we present a series of narrative design considerations when developing an augmented reality application recreating the assault on Omaha Beach in the early morning on D-Day. To what extent may we select existing genre conventions from, for example, documentary film, and adapt them to a location–based audio–visual medium like AR? How can we best combine sequence and access, the narrative flow of an unfolding historical event with the availability of background information, in order to enrich the experience of the story, but without distorting its coherence? To what extent may we draw from existing and well known media representations of the Omaha Beach landing? How was the battle documented with contemporary means? We present the rich documentation of photos, films, drawings, paintings, maps, action reports, official reports, etc., and discuss how these have been employed to create the published AR situated simulation. We also describe and discuss the testing and evaluation of the application on location with visitors, as well as online tracking of its current use.

Augmented Reality Storytelling – Narrative Design and Reconstruction of a Historical Event in situ

This article describes the development of a prototyped digital genre: situated simulations. A situated simulation is a kind of mobile augmented reality system used to augment specific places with additional information about the environment. In the article we present the basic features of the system and discuss several implementations where past topics—historical buildings, actions and events—have been evaluated by users on location. We also present some of the hardware and software constraints of the application.

As the critical challenges of climate change escalate, the need to disseminate essential information about the situation increases. Climate change discourse, however, tends to be general and global, as well as scientific and abstract. Arguments are growing for localized and affective communicational solutions. The present paper addresses this issue by means of situated simulation, a form of indirect augmented reality. We describe the core idea of a simulation application that visualizes climate change based on online data sets for vegetation and terrain, present two current prototypes and completed ‘apps’ and their evaluation, as well as comparing this solution to the state of art in climate change visualization. We suggest there is considerable room for further use of indirect augmented reality in communicating matters of climate change, pedagogically and publicly, temporally and on site.
