Background: The emergence of the internet, particularly Web 2.0 has provided access to the views and opinions of a wide range of individuals opening up opportunities for new forms of communication and knowledge formation. Previous ways of navigating and filtering available information are likely to prove ineffective in these new contexts. Connectivism is one of the most prominent of the network learning theories which have been developed for e-learning environments. It is beginning to be recognized by medical educators. This article aims to examine connectivism and its potential application.Content: The conceptual framework and application of connectivism are presented along with an outline of the main criticisms. Connectivism: A knowledge learning theory for the digital age?

Anatomy remains a cornerstone of medical education despite challenges that have seen a significant reduction in contact hours over recent decades; however, the rise of the “YouTube Generation” or “Generation Connected” (Gen C), offers new possibilities for anatomy education. Gen C, which consists of 80% Millennials, actively interact with social media and integrate it into their education experience. Most are willing to merge their online presence with their degree programs by engaging with course materials and sharing their knowledge freely using these platforms. This integration of social media into undergraduate learning, and the attitudes and mindset of Gen C, who routinely creates and publishes blogs, podcasts, and videos online, has changed traditional learning approaches and the student/teacher relationship. To gauge this, second year undergraduate medical and radiation therapy students (n = 73) were surveyed regarding their use of online social media in relation to anatomy learning. The vast majority of students had employed web-based platforms to source information with 78% using YouTube as their primary source of anatomy-related video clips. These findings suggest that the academic anatomy community may find value in the integration of social media into blended learning approaches in anatomy programs. This will ensure continued connection with the YouTube generation of students while also allowing for academic and ethical oversight regarding the use of online video clips whose provenance may not otherwise be known. Anatomy Education for the YouTube Generation

Healthcare and medical training have no immunity to universal, rapidly changing technology. In medical education, advances like simulations, virtual patients, and e-learning have evolved as pedagogical strategies to facilitate an active, learner-centered teaching approach. According to Chhetri et al., contemporary generations of trainees have grown up immersed in various technologies and are now less functional in the traditional classroom setting [1]. Yet, not all of today’s medical trainees or educators are equally adept and comfortable with technology. Educators are tasked with selecting and filtering appropriate technology-based curricula [1]. Advancement in education requires discerning which learning-assisting technologies merit usage in specific scenarios. To better improve patient care in contemporary times, continual innovative efforts between psychiatric educators and trainees remain essential for fully exploiting technology’s potential. The objective of this commentary is to discuss the various available medical training technologies and subsequent perceptions of trainees to these modalities. Additionally, this commentary considers how educationbased technologies could improve or hinder the learning experience of medical trainees.

Current Technology in Advancing Medical Education: Perspectives for Learning and Providing Care.

BACKGROUND: One of the key components in palliative care is communication. eHealth technologies can be an effective way to support communications among participants in the process of palliative care. However, it is unclear to what extent information technology has been established in this field. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to systematically identify studies and analyze the effectiveness of eHealth interventions in palliative care and the information needs of people involved in the palliative care process. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search using PubMed, Embase, and LILACS according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We collected and analyzed quantitative and qualitative data regarding effectiveness of eHealth interventions and users' information needs in palliative care. RESULTS: Our search returned a total of 240 articles, 17 of which met our inclusion criteria. We found no randomized controlled trial studying the effects of eHealth interventions in palliative care. Studies tended to be observational, non-controlled studies, and a few quasi-experimental studies. Overall there was great heterogeneity in the types of interventions and outcome assessments; some studies reported some improvement on quality of care, documentation effort, cost, and communications. The most frequently reported information need concerned pain management. CONCLUSIONS: There is limited evidence around the effectiveness of eHealth interventions for palliative care patients, caregivers, and health care professionals. Focused research on information needs and high-quality clinical trials to assess their effectiveness are needed.

Effectiveness of eHealth Interventions and Information Needs in Palliative Care: A Systematic Literature Review

Objective: Present-day students have grown up with considerable knowledge concerning multi-media. The communication modes they use are faster, more spontaneous, and independent of place and time. These new web-based forms of information and communication are used by students, educators, and patients in various ways. Universities which have already used these tools report many positive effects on the learning behaviour of the students. In a systematic literature review, we summarized the manner in which the integration of Social Media and Web 2.0 into education has taken place. 

Method: A systematic literature search covering the last 5 years using MeSH terms was carried out via PubMed.

Result: Among the 20 chosen publications, there was only one German publication. Most of the publications are from the US and Great Britain. The latest publications report on the concrete usage of the tools in education, including social networking, podcasts, blogs, wikis, YouTube, Twitter and Skype.

Conclusion: The integration of Web 2.0 and Social Media is the modern form of self-determined learning. It stimulates reflection and actively integrates the students in the construction of their knowledge. With these new tools, the students acquire skills which they need in both their social and professional lives.

Education 2.0 - How has social media and Web 2.0 been integrated into medical education? A systematical literature review

In 2013, a new federal law obligated all German federal states to collect additional clinical data in population-based cancer registries as an active tool for monitoring and improving the quality of cancer care, increasing transparency and promoting health research. Now, 10 years later, the current status of the expanded cancer registration is presented, including current figures on cancer in Germany.Reporting of cancer is mandatory for physicians, and about 5 to 10 reports from different healthcare providers are expected for each case. A uniform national dataset of about 130 items is used, and reports are usually sent electronically to the registry. We used the most recent data available from cancer registries up to the year of diagnosis in 2019. We calculated incidence rates and 5-year relative survival (5YRS) for common cancers. Data on clinical outcomes and benchmarking based on quality indicators (QIs) from guidelines were provided by the Cancer Registry Schleswig-Holstein (CR SH).All federal state cancer registries met most of the previously defined national eligibility criteria. Approximately 505,000 cancer cases were registered in 2019, with breast, prostate, colorectal and lung cancer being the most common cancers. The age-standardised cancer incidence has slightly decreased during the last decade. and spatial heterogeneity can be observed within Germany. 5YRS for all cancers was 67% and 63% for women and men, respectively. Therapy data for rectal cancer in 2019-2021 from the CR SH are shown as an example: 69% of the registered patients underwent surgery, mostly with curative intent (84%) and tumour-free resection (91%). Radiotherapy was given to 33% of the patients, and chemotherapy was given to 40%. Three selected QIs showed differences between involved healthcare providers.The implementation of population-based clinical cancer registration can be considered a success. Comprehensive recording of diagnosis, treatment and disease progression and the use of registry data for quality assurance, benchmarking and feedback have been implemented. 

Population-Based Clinical Cancer Registration in Germany

KernPaeP is a new web-based on- and offline documentation system, which has been developed for pediatric palliative care-teams supporting patient documentation and communication among health care professionals. It provides a reliable system making fast and secure home care documentation possible. KernPaeP is accessible online by registered users using any web-browser. Home care teams use an offline version of KernPaeP running on a netbook for patient documentation on site. Identifying and medical patient data are strictly separated and stored on two database servers. The system offers a stable, enhanced two-way algorithm for synchronization between the offline component and the central database servers. KernPaeP is implemented meeting highest security standards while still maintaining high usability. The web-based documentation system allows ubiquitous and immediate access to patient data. Sumptuous paper work is replaced by secure and comprehensive electronic documentation. KernPaeP helps saving time and improving the quality of documentation. Due to development in close cooperation with pediatric palliative professionals, KernPaeP fulfils the broad needs of home-care documentation. The technique of web-based online and offline documentation is in general applicable for arbitrary home care scenarios.
