To achieve energy saving and emission reduction goals, recyclable and healable thermoset materials are highly attractive. Polymer copolymerization has been proven to be a critical strategy for preparing high‐performance polymeric materials. However, it remains a huge challenge to develop high‐performance recyclable and healable thermoset materials. Here, polyimine dynamic networks based on two monomers with bulky pendant groups, which not only displayed mechanical properties higher than the strong and tough polymers, e.g., polycarbonate, but also excellent self‐repairing capability and recyclability as thermosets are developed. Owing to the stability of conjugation effect by aromatic benzene rings, the final polyimine networks are far more stable than the reported counterparts, exhibiting excellent hydrolysis resistance under both alkaline condition and most organic solvents. These polyimine materials with conjugation structure can be completely depolymerized into monomers recovery in an acidic aqueous solution at ambient temperature. Resulting from the bulky pendant units, this method allows the exchange reactions of conjugation polyimine vitrimer easily within minutes for self‐healing function. Moreover, the introduction of trifluoromethyl diphenoxybenzene backbones significantly increases tensile properties of polyimine materials. This work provides an effective strategy for fabricating high‐performance polymer materials with multiple functions.

Mechanically Robust, Recyclable, and Self‐Healing Polyimine Networks

With the development of a circular economy and sustainable environment, efficient and sustainable recycling of useful chemicals from thermosets is of great significance. However, most commercial thermosetting materials are difficult to reprocess, degrade, and recycle due to their permanent cross-linked network, and the preparation process consumes much fossil energy and causes serious environmental pollution problems. Furthermore, the high flammability makes them unsafe during service life and limits their applications. Herein, we used renewable lignin derivative vanillin as bio-based materials to synthesize a trialdehyde monomer (TMP) with phosphorus element and developed the bio-based polyimine dynamic networks with excellent comprehensive properties including outstanding reprocess ability, degradation recyclability, and fire resistance performance based on polyetherimide and 4-aminophenyl disulfide. The prepared bio-based polyimine materials with the dual dynamic networks (BPDNs) exhibited outstanding mechanical property with tensile strength of 61.6 MPa, super-rapid degradation rate and high monomer recovery rates of 70.5 %. The prepared BPDNs samples showed great flame retardancy with V0 rating and V1 rating in UL-94 vertical burning test and high LOI value of 29 %. Moreover, BPDNs could be reprocessed within 10 min at elevated temperatures (150 °C). This work provides a very effective method to prepare bio-based advanced thermosetting materials with multiple functions. 

Rapidly recyclable, monomer recovery and flame-retardant bio-based polyimine networks

Environmental pollution caused by nondegradable fossil-based plastics is one of the biggest global concerns. Bamboo, which is a renewable and biodegradable biomass resource, is a promising material for developing green plastic substitutes. However, the processing (e.g., thermal processing) of bamboo into plastic substitutes remains a considerable challenge because bamboo is a stable multicomponent structure crosslinked via strong hydrogen bond (H-bond) and covalent-bond interactions, which results in its non-thermoplastic characteristic. Herein, bamboo powders (BPs) were integrated into polyimine (PI) covalent adaptable networks (CANs) using a simple heat-pressing approach, which helped us successfully fabricate a thermally processable composite film (BP/PI). The heat-driven dynamic network exchange characteristic of PI also provides BP/PI with excellent reshaping, rehealing, and remolding capabilities. The multiple H-bond interactions between BPs and PI provide BP/PI with excellent tensile strength (45.2 MPa) and flexural strength (121.9 MPa). BP/PI also exhibits remarkable water and organic solvent resistance, chemical degradability, closed-loop recyclability, and biodegradability. This attractive BP/PI material represents a high-performance and ecofriendly plastic substitute. 

A strong, biodegradable, and closed-loop recyclable bamboo-based plastic substitute enabled by polyimine covalent adaptable networks

Traditional carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites (CFRECs) pose significant challenges to sustainable development due to their non-self-healable and non-recyclable nature, which causes environmental pollutions. To address these challenges, our research focuses on the design of carbon fiber reinforced vitrimer (CF/vitrimer) composites system with dual self-healing properties (self-healing resin and self-healing interface) and dual recyclable capabilities (recycling vitrimer resin and recycling CF). On the one hand, the scratch on the vitrimer resin exhibited rapid self-healing properties (achieving ˃ 95 % recovery within 5 min). Additionally, the self-healing interface was constructed between the functionalized CF and the vitrimer resin, and even after undergoing five self-healing cycles, the self-healing interface maintained a self-healing efficiency of 77.4 %. On the other hand, the CF/vitrimer composites could be easily and effectively degraded in ethylene glycol, resulting in recycled vitrimer resin and recycled CF. These results not only indicate the potential for developing other types of self-healing CF/vitrimer composites but also highlight their contributions to sustainable development.
