With recent successes of laboratory, inatmosphere, and space demonstrations of free-space optical communications, there is no doubt that the technology is ready for operational deployment. While these successes have shown that there are no laws of physics against such systems, their estimated system costs are still much too high for serious considerations. Two types of development can reduce the cost dramatically. The first is via the improvement of physical-link communication efficiency by an order of magnitude using photon-counting receivers for vacuum channels, system complexity, weight, and power for space systems can be greatly reduced. The second is through the use of coherent systems in links where clear-air turbulence impairs communication efficiency, and in multiple access applications where coherent processing can reduce the level of interference, significant reduction in system costs can be realized

Free-Space Optical Communications

For optical homodyning, the matrix representation of a lossless beam splitter belongs to the SU(2) group of unimodular second-order unitary matrices. The connection between this group and the rotation group in three dimensions permits the field density operators at the input and output ports of the beam splitter to be related by means of well-known angular-momentum transformations. This, in turn, provides the joint output photon-number distribution, which may be written as a Fourier series in the relative phase shift imparted by the beam splitter, for a general joint state at its inputs. The series collapses to a single term if one of the input fields is diagonal in the number-state representation. If the inputs to both ports are further restricted to be pure number states, the joint, as well as the marginal photon-number distributions, turn out to be directly proportional to the square of Jacobi polynomials in the beam-splitter transmittance. These photon-number probabilities are invariant to a set of physical and time-reversal symmetries. When one of the input photon-number states is the vacuum, the beam splitter simply deletes photons from the other port in Bernoulli fashion, as if they were classical particles. The output photon number is then described by the binomial distribution. If the inputs at the two ports are different number states, neither of which is the vacuum, the photon-number distribution is expressible in terms of summed and weighted products of the results for photomixing with the vacuum. If the inputs at the two ports are identical number states, and a beam splitter of transmittance \ensuremath{\tau}=(1/2 is used, the photon-number distribution assumes a simple but interesting form. It vanishes for odd photon numbers, indicating that the photons assemble in pairs at each output port. Finally, it is shown that homodyning quantum fluctuations can be reduced by using a balanced photomixer for arbitrary input states.

Quantum-mechanical lossless beam splitter: SU(2) symmetry and photon statistics

We report on the design and initial clinical experience with a real-time endoscopic optical coherence tomography (EOCT) imaging system. The EOCT unit includes a high-speed optical coherence tomography interferometer, endoscope-compatible catheter probes, and real-time data capture and display hardware and software. Several technological innovations are introduced that improve EOCT efficiency and performance. In initial clinical studies using the EOCT system, the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, ileum, colon, and rectum of patients with normal endoscopic findings were examined. In these initial investigations, EOCT imaging clearly delineated the substructure of the mucosa and submucosa in several gastrointestinal organs; microscopic structures such as glands, blood vessels, pits, villi, and crypts were also observed.

Coherent optical communications, an area of research that shows great promise for future high-bandwidth and long-haul applications, is reviewed. Coherent optical receivers, which add light to the received signal as part of the detection process, have numerous advantages over direct-detection receivers, most notably increased sensitivity and increased selectivity, at the cost of increased complexity. The performance of coherent optical receivers under shot-noise-limited conditions is reviewed for a variety of modulation and demodulation formats. In addition, laser phase noise is discussed, and its effect on receiver performance is analyzed. >

Performance of coherent optical receivers

With high-speed space optical crosslink being a reality, the construction of an optical satellite network as part of a larger integrated space-terrestrial network is now feasible. This paper explores the architecture implications of the invention of such a radical technology building block. Not only can the satellite network performance and cost undergo quantum-leap improvements but also such a network can have profound transforming effects on space system architectures and data network user applications.

The performance of a dual-detector optical heterodyne receiver was analyzed and compared with the performance of a conventional single-detector heterodyne receiver. The dual-detector receiver is found to offer two main advantages over the single-detector receiver-1) increased performance in the presence of local oscillator intensity fluctuations that might severely degrade single-detector receiver performance, and 2) decreased local oscillator power requirements. These two advantages are particularly important in a communication system which uses semiconductor laser diodes as local oscillators. Such lasers suffer from intrinsic wide-band intensity fluctuations and can also impose strict power constraints on receiver design. Based on the analysis, suggestions for the optimal design of a dual-detector heterodyne receiver are made. Also, several experiments were performed to demonstrate the improved performance of the dual-detector receiver-both for unguided- and guided-wave receivers.
