The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has fundamentally transformed creative work practices in the design industry. Existing studies have identified both opportunities and challenges for creative practitioners in their collaboration with generative AI and explored ways to facilitate effective human-AI co-creation. However, there is still a limited understanding of designers' collaboration with AI that supports creative processes distinct from generative AI. To address these gaps, this study focuses on understanding designers' collaboration with decision-making AI, which supports the convergence process in the creative workflow, as opposed to the divergent process supported by generative AI. Specifically, we conducted a case study at an online advertising design company to explore how professional graphic designers at the company perceive the impact of decision-making AI on their creative work practices. The case company incorporated an AI system that predicts the effectiveness of advertising design into the design workflow as a decision-making support tool. Findings from interviews with 12 designers identified how designers trust and rely on AI, its perceived benefits and challenges, and their strategies for navigating the challenges. Based on the findings, we discuss design recommendations for integrating decision-making AI into the creative design workflow.

Understanding Collaboration between Professional Designers and Decision-making AI: A Case Study in the Workplace

Recent advancements in HCI and AI research attempt to support user experience (UX) practitioners with AI-enabled tools. Despite the potential of emerging models and new interaction mechanisms, mainstream adoption of such tools remains limited. We took the lens of Human-Centered AI and presented a systematic literature review of 359 papers, aiming to synthesize the current landscape, identify trends, and uncover UX practitioners' unmet needs in AI support. Guided by the Double Diamond design framework, our analysis uncovered that UX practitioners' unique focuses on empathy building and experiences across UI screens are often overlooked. Simplistic AI automation can obstruct the valuable empathy-building process. Furthermore, focusing solely on individual UI screens without considering interactions and user flows reduces the system's practical value for UX designers. Based on these findings, we call for a deeper understanding of UX mindsets and more designer-centric datasets and evaluation metrics, for HCI and AI communities to collaboratively work toward effective AI support for UX.

AI Assistance for UX: A Literature Review Through Human-Centered AI

Recent advancements in foundation models show promising capability in graphic design generation. Several studies have started employing Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) to evaluate graphic designs, assuming that LMMs can properly assess their quality, but it is unclear if the evaluation is reliable. One way to evaluate the quality of graphic design is to assess whether the design adheres to fundamental graphic design principles, which are the designer's common practice. In this paper, we compare the behavior of GPT-based evaluation and heuristic evaluation based on design principles using human annotations collected from 60 subjects. Our experiments reveal that, while GPTs cannot distinguish small details, they have a reasonably good correlation with human annotation and exhibit a similar tendency to heuristic metrics based on design principles, suggesting that they are indeed capable of assessing the quality of graphic design. Can GPTs Evaluate Graphic Design Based on Design Principles?

During the creation of graphic designs, individuals inevitably spend a lot of time and effort on adjusting visual attributes (e.g., positions, colors, and fonts) of elements to make them more aesthetically pleasing. It is a trial-and-error process, requires repetitive edits, and relies on good design knowledge. In this work, we seek to alleviate such difficulty by automatically suggesting aesthetic improvements, i.e., taking an existing design as the input and generating a refined version with improved aesthetic quality as the output. This goal presents two challenges: proposing a refined design based on the user-given one, and assessing whether the new design is better aesthetically. To cope with these challenges, we propose a design principle-guided candidate generation stage and a data-driven candidate evaluation stage. In the candidate generation stage, we generate candidate designs by leveraging design principles as the guidance to make changes around the existing design. In the candidate evaluation stage, we learn a ranking model upon a dataset that can reflect humans aesthetic preference, and use it to choose the most aesthetically pleasing one from the generated candidates. We implement a prototype system on presentation slides and demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through quantitative analysis, sample results, and user studies.
