Wetlands seem to be especially vulnerable to invasions. Even though ≤6% of the earth's land mass is wetland, 24% (8 of 33) of the world's most invasive plants are wetland species. Furthermore, many wetland invaders form monotypes, which alter habitat structure, lower biodiversity (both number and “quality” of species), change nutrient cycling and productivity (often increasing it), and modify food webs. Wetlands are landscape sinks, which accumulate debris, sediments, water, and nutrients, all of which facilitate invasions by creating canopy gaps or accelerating the growth of opportunistic plant species. These and other disturbances to wetlands, such as propagule influx, salt influx, and hydroperiod alteration, create opportunities that are well matched by wetland opportunists. Causes and Consequences of Invasive Plants in Wetlands: Opportunities, Opportunists, and Outcomes

Individuals of 28 species of cyprinodontoid fishes have been reported from estuaries/salt marshes of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America. Some species show limited latitudinal distributions and/or occupy a limited range of habitats; others are widely distributed and/or occupy a wide range of habitats. A literature survey was made of conditions of water temperature, dissolved-oxygen (DO) concentrations, and salinities at sites where individuals of each species had been collected, and of laboratory-determined tolerances or lethal limits and other responses to those abiotic conditions. Individuals of Cyprinodon variegatus showed the widest overall range of tolerance of environmental temperatures, −1.9–45.4°C, with Gambusia rhizophorae showing the highest lower temperature-tolerance limit, 17°C. The only species highly sensitive to hypoxia was Floridichthys carpio, which showed “stress” at DO levels of 6–8 mg kg−1. All showed use of aquatic surface respiration, except for Kryptolebias marmoratus, which uses aerial respiration in the presence of H2S, and/or under hypoxic conditions. Individuals of C. variegatus were found to tolerate ambient salinities ranging from < 0.5 to 125.2, or higher, and several species of the genus Fundulus were found to tolerate concentrations ranging from <0.5 to ≥100. However, some of the species discussed cannot tolerate salinities beyond those of dilute brackish waters. In most instances, laboratory-determined tolerance limits of temperature and salinity were wider than conditions under which individuals of these species had been found in nature. The majority of available information related to adult individuals, with few studies focused on immature stages; however, existing information permitted a brief review of spawning, incubation, and early development features in Fundulus heteroclitus. Suggestions were made, based on existing information, as to species that would be most likely to show altered population distributions resulting from continued global warming. These included five species that have tropical/subtropical, or subtropical/temperate distributions. Also, a few others were included that show extensive latitudinal distributions, most extending northward into cooler temperate regions of the Atlantic coast. At present, none of these species has shown a range alteration that can be attributed to global warming.

Physicochemical environments and tolerances of cyprinodontoid fishes found in estuaries and salt marshes of eastern North America

Phragmites australis (common reed) is widespread in North America, with native and non-native haplotypes. Many ecologists and wetland managers have considered P. australis a weed with little value to the native biota or human society. I document important ecosystem services of Phragmites including support for many common and rare species of plants and animals. This paper is based on an extensive review of the ecology and natural history literature, discussions with field workers, and observations in 13 US states and one Canadian province during the past 40 years. Phragmites sequesters nutrients, heavy metals and carbon, builds and stabilizes soils, and creates self-maintaining vegetation in urban and industrial areas where many plants do not thrive. These non-habitat ecosystem services are proportional to biomass and productivity. Phragmites was widely used by Native Americans for many purposes; the most important current direct use is for the treatment of wastes. Most of the knowledge of non-habitat ecosystem services is based on studies of P. australis haplotype M (an Old World haplotype). Phragmites also has habitat functions for many organisms. These functions depend on the characteristics of the landscape, habitat, Phragmites stand, species using Phragmites and life history element. The functions that Phragmites provides for many species are optimal at lower levels of Phragmites biomass and extent of stands. Old World Phragmites, contrary to many published statements, as well as North American native Phragmites, provide valuable ecosystem services including products for human use and habitat functions for other organisms. Phragmites stands may need management (e.g. thinning, fragmentation, containment or removal) to create or maintain suitable habitat for desired species of animals and plants.

Ecosystem services of Phragmites in North America with emphasis on habitat functions

In recent decades, marshes naturally dominated bySpartina spp. have been replaced byPhragmites australis throughout the northeastern United States. We suggest that early in this invasion there was little effect on the fish fauna. As the invasion proceeds, the marsh surface habitat became more altered (i.e., elevated, flattened, reduced water-filled depressions, and reduced standing water), which resulted in a reduction of feeding, reproduction, and nursery function for fishes, especiallyFundulus spp. These potential changes in marsh habitat and function have resulted in numerous attempts to removePhragmites and restoreSpartina spp. To evaluate the response of marsh surface fishes toPhragmites treatment, we examined fish use in the brackish water reaches of Alloway Creek in the Delaware Bay estuary. ReferencePhragmites habitats were compared with referenceSpartina alterniflora-dominated habitats and sites treated (1996–1998) to removePhragmites to restore former vegetation (i.e., restored, now comprised of 100%Spartina). Fish were sampled with an array (n=9 at each site) of shallow pit traps (rectangular glass dishes, 27.5×17.5×3.7 cm). Small individuals (mean=17.5, 5–45 mm TL) dominated all pit trap collections. Fish abundance was highest at the restored (catch per unit effort [CPUE]=2.16) andSpartina (CPUE=0.81) sites with significantly lower values atPhragmites (CPUE=0.05) habitats. Samples were dominated by young-of-the-year mummichog,Fundulus heteroclitus (98% of total fish, n=631). The only other fish species collected was spotfin killifish,Fundulus luciae (2% of total catch, n=14), which was only present in restored andSpartina habitats. These observations suggest that the restored marsh is providing habitat (water-filled depressions on the marsh surface) for young-of-the-yearFundulus spp. These marshes are responding favorably to the restoration based on the much greater abundance of fish in restored versusPhragmites habitats and the overall similarity between restored andSpartina habitats.

Mechanisms of Marsh Habitat Alteration Due to Phragmites: Response of Young-of-the-year Mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) to Treatment for Phragmites Removal

We evaluated the influence of water depth on relative predation risk for mojarra (Eucinostomus spp.) in six tidal creeks on Andros Island, Bahamas. Relative predation risk was determined using a tethering protocol combined with underwater visual census. In one experiment, we found that relative predation risk increased predictably with water depth (r2 = 0.83), and survival of tethered mojarra decreased with water depth (r2 = 0.71). We identified three depth zones containing differing levels of predation threat: refugia (0–19 cm), transition (20–69 cm), and predation (> 70 cm). Predation on mojarra rarely occurred within the refugia zone (2% eaten) and always in the predation zone (100% eaten). Additional factors not examined in this study (e.g., mangrove complexity, predator density) likely drive variability of relative predation risk within the transition zone. In a second experiment, we directly examined influence of water depth on relative predation risk at fixed locations from high tide to low tide in a single creek. Mean relative predation risk was significantly higher during higher tides at deeper water depths. Results provide experimental evidence that exploitation of shallow water refugia by motile prey can significantly reduce predation risk. We expect the distribution of motile fishes is at least partially influenced by spatially-dynamic shallow water refugia.

We compared nekton densities over a range of measured flooding conditions and locations withinPhragmites australis andSpartina alterniflora (salt marsh cordgrass) at the Charles Wheeler Salt Marsh, located on the lower Housatonic River estuary in southwestern Connecticut. Nekton were sampled on nine spring high tide events from May to October 2000 using bottomless lift nets positioned between 0–5 and 10–20 m from the creek edge. Flooding depth, duration, and frequency were measured from each vegetation type during each sampling month. Benthic macroinvertebrate density was also measured within each vegetation type in May, July, and September. Frequency of flooding was 52% lower and flooding depth and duration were also significantly reduced inP. australis relative toS. alterniflora. A total of 4,197 individuals representing 7 species, mostlyPalaemonetes pugio (dagger-blade grass shrimp) andFundulus heteroclitus (common mummichog), were captured.P. pugio densities were significantly greater inS. alterniflora as were benthic macroinvertebrate density and taxa richness during May, but not during June or October. Total fish density was not significantly different betweenP. australis andS. alterniflora and was independent of location on the marsh. Significantly more juvenileF. heteroclitus were collected withinS. alterniflora relative toP. australis in June and July, suggesting that recruitment of this species may be lower inP. australis habitat. Fish density generally did not vary predictably across the range of flooding depth and duration; there was a positive relationship between flooding depth and fish density inS. alterniflora. The measured reduction in flooding frequency (52%) withinP. australis at the Housatonic site would result in an average total monthly fish use, expressed as density, of 447 ind m−2 forP. australis and 947 ind m−2 forS. alterniflora. WhenP. australis expansion results in reduction of flooding frequency and duration, nekton community composition can change, access to the marsh surface is reduced twofold, and nursery habitat function may be impaired.
