For the purpose of paving the way for reducing environmental pollution globally, adapting green energy to people’s lives in more areas is seen as a good solution. The strategic plan implemented to prevent possible energy and water shortages in the future includes cleaning the environment and air from carbon emissions as soon as possible. Countries are taking mandatory sectoral and individual measures to remove the use of CO2-based fuels. As a part of the sustainable development process for Turkey, which is trying to convince its individuals to use more green energy, it is important for society to adopt more electric vehicles. However, there are few internationally accepted studies on the adoption of EVs in Turkey, and a limited number of studies include individuals’ environmental concerns (EC) and green trust (GT) structures. In this research, which we started on the basis of filling this literature gap by taking behavioral factors into account, we expand the TPB framework (subjective norm (SN), attitude (AT), and perceived behavioral control (PBC)) with the “EC” and “GT” constructs. So, with this research, we examine the behavioral factors that affect the intention to purchase electric vehicles (EVPI) of consumers residing in Turkey, based on the theory of planned behavior. Thus, we aim to reveal the barriers to the adoption of EVs in Turkey with an empirical application and SEM analysis. The first phase includes a review of the literature, adaptation of the survey, and development of the hypotheses. The second phase involves conducting a survey with 626 consumers whose information was obtained from four dealers in Turkey. We used Cronbach’s alpha and CFA analyses on the data obtained from the survey. In the final phase, we performed an SEM analysis for our extended theory of planned behavior (ETPB) and hypotheses. The CFA results revealed that the survey showed compatibility with EV purchase intentions. The SEM results indicated that the behavioral constructs of AT, PBC, EC, and GT were positively correlated with EV purchase intentions, and our new ETPB model, extended with EC and GT, was suitable for predicting consumers’ EVPI, suggesting that EVPI are a result of behavioral constructs. This study is unique for being the first in Turkey to focus on whether the factors of EC or GT can predict consumers’ EVPI. On the other hand, it was found that SN had a negative effect on consumers’ EVPI, and this result was in agreement with some studies in the literature and contradicted by others. In addition, we make suggestions based on the findings of the research to the country and related sector managers in order for the country to progress at a level that will set an example for other developing countries in its sustainable development plan. This study contributes to the EVs industry by revealing the consumers’ responses and increasing their marketing efforts. Our findings constitute a comprehensive example for further research on sustainable consumption, EVs, EVPI, and ETPB.

Analysis of Consumers’ Electric Vehicle Purchase Intentions: An Expansion of the Theory of Planned Behavior

Maintaining sustainable consumer behaviours is necessary for both mitigating environmental problems and the success of sustainable businesses. However, to date, the focus is mainly on the motivation-adoption link (i.e., how to motivate sustainable consumer behaviours) rather than the adoption-continuance link (i.e., how to maintain those behaviours). This study addresses the link between sustainability adoption and continuance, through a structured literature review. Specifically, this study synthesizes what is (and is not) known about the post-adoption (continuance) stage of the sustainable consumer journey, by reviewing and integrating the results of 87 articles. This review has three key outcomes. First, it elaborates on the importance and distinction of the continuance stage, which is predicted by a set of different and ‘evolving’ factors, compared with motivation and initial adoption. Second, the key components of the continuance stage are identified and grouped under (I) post-adoption cognitive perceptions, (II) emotional outcomes, and (III) subsequent behavioural patterns of (dis)continuance, spillover, advocacy, loyalty and habit formation. Third, this study introduces the concept of sustainable consumer behaviour continuity and discusses theoretical relationships in a conceptual framework. Finally, this review identifies knowledge gaps and provides research directions as well as implications for theory and practice.

How to Maintain Sustainable Consumer Behaviors: A Systematic Review and Future Research Agenda

Public bike-sharing service systems (PBSSSs) offer an alternative to satisfy users’ needs for short-trip connections. The PBSSSs provide options for short-trip connections and diversify the service experience for different users. PBSSSs also play a critical role in enabling urban citizens to reduce the needs to drive their cars and using public transport instead. This study explores the service performance of the public bike-sharing service systems for three styles of users. It proposes the integrated evaluation model of the public bike-sharing service system (PBSSS). The DEMATEL (Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) was used to solve the network relation structure between aspects. The ANP (analytic network process) was applied to evaluate the relationship between aspects and component weights. VIKOR (Vlsekriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje) was used to analyze the public bike-sharing system’s service performance for different users regarding its strengths and weaknesses. After comparing the strengths and weaknesses of the various users’ preferences for the urban public bike service systems, the study proposes a service development strategy for different styles of users based on the NRM (network relation map). The results can aid PBSSS providers and urban managers, strengthen the PBSSSs’ competitiveness, and make the PBSSSs become the best urban short-trip connection transportation tool.

Determining the Sustainable Development Strategies and Adoption Paths for Public Bike-Sharing Service Systems (PBSSSs) under Various Users’ Considerations

Loyalty toward shared e-scooter: Exploring the role of service quality, satisfaction, and environmental consciousness

How is cycling culture defined? Because the word “culture” brings with it deep complexities, there is a need to understand varying contexts in looking for suitable strategies toward the advancement of cycling culture. The stage for cycling culture is the landscape where cycling infrastructure can be properly provided. With development, an influential element would be economic capacity. The paper explores the influence of the economic development divide by comparing cyclist perception between developed and developing countries, namely Taiwan and the Philippines. An online survey between 122 Taiwanese and 111 Filipino cyclists was conducted to find out the landscape needs of people to consider cycling transport based on affordances in the landscape. The variables selected were based on landscape elements for cycling as a commuting activity. The data were processed through factor analysis to reveal latent landscape needs to profile cycling needs. Two factors were identified as ‘environmental’ and ‘civil facilities.’ The factor loadings were then compared based on the nationalities which revealed that the bike riding motivation were different with relating to the context of their respective environment and similar with the basic infrastructural demands.

A tale of two cyclists: a cross-cultural comparison between Taiwanese and Filipino perceptions on cycling infrastructure landscapes

Bike-sharing systems are gaining in popularity with a focus on sustainability in transportation. This study extends the concept of green product marketing to green transportation marketing. This study uses four-phase loyalty theory as a framework to examine the users' green loyalty toward shared bicycles. The relationships among four concepts – green perceived value, green trust, green use intention and green loyalty are proposed in the conceptual model. Hypotheses testing is conducted using the empirical assessment of the bike sharing system in Taipei City. Our results show that green perceived value and green trust of users positively relate to green use intention and green loyalty. Further, we also demonstrate green perceived value indirectly affects the green loyalty via green trust and green use intention. Our findings suggest authorities may promote bike sharing by enhancing user perceptions of the system's green value, increase trust in this form of green transportation, and thus foster higher levels of loyalty resulting in continued use of shared bicycles.
