The utilization of algae in aquaculture is environmentally friendly, safe, and cost-effective and can effectively substitute for fish meal and fish oil in aquatic feeds. Incorporating algae as dietary supplements leads to significant enhancements in aquatic animals’ health and also improves the aquatic ecosystem. Algae are rich sources of nutrients and serve as the foundational food source in the aquatic food chain. Currently, 40 different algae species are employed in aquaculture. Furthermore, algae contributes to elevating the overall quality of aquatic feed products. Aquaculture stands as the most vital food production sector globally; however, challenges such as infection outbreaks and aquatic environmental pollution pose significant threats to the sustainable growth of this industry. An alternative strategy for mitigating environmental issues and improving aquatic production involves the utilization of algae. The novelty in the applications of algae in aquaculture stems from their multifaceted roles and benefits, such as their capacity to improve water quality, serve as nutrient-rich feed supplements, and enhance the overall health and productivity of aquatic species. These versatile applications of algae represent a fresh and innovative approach to sustainable aquaculture practices. This review furnishes insights into the use of algae, algae extracts, or components derived from algae to enhance water quality. Additionally, it covers the utilization of algae-based feed supplements, boosting of the immune system, enhanced growth performance, and disease resistance in aquatic animals.

Use of Algae in Aquaculture: A Review

In the past five years the use of rotifers in ecotoxicologial studies has substantially increased. This greater interest has been due to the central role of rotifers in freshwater planktonic communities, the ease and speed of making quantitative measurements of mortality and reproduction, their sensitivity to common pollutants, the commercial availability of cysts, and the existence of reliable, standardized protocols. The main endpoints used in ecotoxicology studies are reviewed, including mortality, reproduction, behavior, cellular biomarkers, mesocosms, and species diversity in natural populations. For each endpoint, published studies are cited, along with the compounds investigated, duration of exposure, and the LC50s, EC50s or NOECs reported. Rotifers have been included as part of a standardized mesocosm and in several large-scale, outdoor mesocosm studies. A critique of rotifer use in ecotoxicology is offered and it is concluded that the scientific basis for including rotifers as part of a battery of ecotoxicological tests is well established.

Rotifers in ecotoxicology: a review

ASBTRACT The present investigation used Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifera) to evaluate the water quality in Callao Bay, Peru. The water samples were taken in four areas: P1 in La Punta, P2 in Chucuito, P3 in front of the Callao Port Terminal and P4 in the San Lorenzo and El Frontón Islands, and in four seasonal periods: autumn-2015, winter- 2015, spring-2015, and summer-2016. Physical-chemical parameters, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, heavy metals, and bioassays with seawater at 24 h and 48 h of exposure to Brachionus plicatilis obtained from a standardized culture were evaluated in each area and seasonal period. High concentrations of Ag, Pb, Hg, Cu, Cr, Ni and Zn were found at all the sampling sites. The ​​ no observed effect concentration (NOEC) values (concentration at which a significant effect of mortality is not observed with respect to the control) and lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) (minimum concentration at which a significant effect of mortality is observed with respect to the control) at 48 h of exposure to the B. plicatilis bioassay were lower for P1 (winter-2015) and P2 (winter-2015). Principal components analysis (PCA) showed that principal component 1 (PC1) contributed 38.70% and PC2 17.70%. PC1 was formed by LOEC of Cd, Hg, Ni, Ag, and Pb while PC2 was related to Cu, Cr and Zn. According to these results Brachionus plicatilis can be used as a bioindicator organism to assess water quality in the marine environment. Effects of dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum on swimming behavior and expression of heat shock protein (hsp) genes in the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana

This present study was conducted to provide evidence and an explanation for the apoptosis that occurs in the marine rotifer Brachionus plicatilis when facing 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) stress. Metabolomics analysis showed that aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis, and arginine biosynthesis were the top three sensitive pathways to BDE-47 exposure, which resulted in the reduction in the amino acid pool level. Pyrimidine metabolism and purine metabolism pathways were also significantly influenced, and the purine and pyrimidine content were obviously reduced in the low (0.02 mg/L) and middle (0.1 mg/L) concentration groups while increased in the high (0.5 mg/L) concentration group, evidencing the disorder of nucleotide synthesis and decomposition in B. plicatilis. The biochemical detection of the key enzymes in purine metabolism and pyrimidine metabolism showed the downregulation of Glutamine Synthetase (GS) protein expression and the elevation of Xanthine Oxidase (XOD) activity, which suggested the impaired DNA repair and ROS overproduction. The content of DNA damage biomarker (8-OHdG) increased in treatment groups, and the p53 signaling pathway was found to be activated, as indicated by the elevation of the p53 protein expression and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. The ROS scavenger (N-acetyl-L-cysteine, NAC) addition effectively alleviated not only ROS overproduction but also DNA damage as well as the activation of apoptosis. The combined results backed up the speculation that purine metabolism and pyrimidine metabolism alteration play a pivotal role in BDE-47-induced ROS overproduction and DNA damage, and the consequent activation of the p53 signaling pathway led to the observed apoptosis in B. plicatilis.
