Graphene is composed of single-atom thick sheets of sp2 bonded carbon atoms that are arranged in a perfect two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice. Because of this structure, graphene is characterized by a number of unique and exceptional structural, optical, and electronic properties.1 Specifically, these extraordinary properties include, but are not limited to, a high planar surface area that is calculated to be 2630 m2 g−1,2 superior mechanical strength with a Young’s modulus of 1100 GPa,3 unparalleled thermal conductivity (5000 W m−1 K−1),4 remarkable electronic properties (e.g., high carrier mobility [10 000 cm2 V−1 s−1] and capacity),5 and alluring optical characteristics (e.g., high opacity [~97.7%] and the ability to quench fluorescence).6 As such, it should come as no surprise that graphene is currently, without any doubt, the most intensively studied material for a wide range of applications that include electronic, energy, and sensing outlets.1c Moreover, because of these unique chemical and physical properties, graphene and graphene-based nanomaterials have attracted increasing interest, and, arguably, hold the greatest promise for implementation into a wide array of bioapplications.7

In the last several years, numerous studies have utilized graphene in bioapplications ranging from the delivery of chemotherapeutics for the treatment of cancer8 to biosensing applications for a host of medical conditions9 and even for the differentiation and imaging of stem cells.10 While promising and exciting, recent reports have demonstrated that the combination of graphene with nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, thereby forming graphene–nanoparticle hybrid structures, offers a number of additional unique physicochemical properties and functions that are both highly desirable and markedly advantageous for bioapplications when compared to the use of either material alone (Figure 1).11 These graphene–nanoparticle hybrid structures are especially alluring because not only do they display the individual properties of the nanoparticles, which can already possess beneficial optical, electronic, magnetic, and structural properties that are unavailable in bulk materials, and of graphene, but they also exhibit additional advantageous and often synergistic properties that greatly augment their potential for bioapplications.

Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of Graphene–Nanoparticle Hybrid Materials for Bioapplications

Graphene (GN) has received intense interest in fields such as physics, chemistry, biology and materials science due to its exceptional electrical, mechanical, thermal and optical properties as well as its unique two-dimensional (2D) structure and large surface area. Recently, GN–inorganic nanocomposites have been opened up an exciting new field in the science and technology of GN. From the viewpoint of chemistry and materials, this account presents an overview of the synthesis and application of GN–inorganic nanocomposites. The challenges and perspective of these emerging nanocomposites are also discussed.

Recent advances in carbon-based polymer nanocomposites for electromagnetic interference shielding

Graphene is highly desirable as an electromagnetic wave (EM) absorber because of its large interface, high dielectric loss, and low density. Nevertheless, the conductive and electromagnetic parameters of pure graphene are too high to meet the requirement of impedance match, which results in strong reflection and weak absorption. In this paper, we report a facile solvothermal route to synthesize reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheets combined with surface-modified γ-Fe2O3 colloidal nanoparticle clusters. The obtained two-dimensional hybrids exhibit a relatively low EM reflection coefficient (RC) and wide effective absorption bandwidth, which are mainly attributed to the unique microstructure of colloidal nanoparticle clusters assembled on RGO. The nanoparticle clusters have more interfaces. The interfacial polarization within nanoparticle clusters and conductivity loss of RGO plays an important role in absorbing EM power. Electromagnetic Wave Absorption Properties of Reduced Graphene Oxide Modified by Maghemite Colloidal Nanoparticle Clusters

For the first time, mesoporous Fe3O4@ZnO sphere decorated graphene (GN–pFe3O4@ZnO) composites with uniform size, considerable porosity, high magnetization and extraordinary electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption properties were synthesized by a simple and efficient three-step method. Structure and morphology details were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution electron microscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Electron microscopy images reveal that pFe3O4@ZnO spheres with obvious porous and core–shell structures are uniformly coated on both sides of the GN sheets without significant numbers of vacancies or apparent aggregation. EM wave absorption properties of epoxy containing 30 wt% GN–pFe3O4@ZnO were investigated at room temperature in the frequency region of 0.2–18 GHz. The absorption bandwidth with reflection loss (RL) values less than −10 dB is up to 11.4 GHz, and the minimal RL is almost −40 dB. The intrinsic physical and chemical properties of the materials, the synergy of Fe3O4 and ZnO, and particularly the unique multi-interfaces are fundamental to the enhancement of EM absorption properties. The as-prepared GN–pFe3O4@ZnO composites are shown to be lightweight, have strong absorption, and broad frequency bandwidth EM absorbers.

Controllable synthesis of porous Fe3O4@ZnO sphere decorated graphene for extraordinary electromagnetic wave absorption

A facile and robust route for the pre-synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) exclusively assembled on both sides of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets with tunable density forming two-dimensional NPs composite membranes is developed in solution. The assembly is driven by electrostatic attraction, and the nanocomposite sheets display considerable mechanical robustness, such as it can sustain supersonic and solvothermal treatments without NPs falling off, also, can freely float in solution and curl into a tube. The obtained two-dimensional composite grain membranes exhibit superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature but responds astutely to an external magnetic field. In addition, these magnetic composite membranes show an enhanced absorption capability for microwaves. The grain sheets are attractive for biomedical, sensors, environmental applications and electric-magnetic devices benefited from large surfaces, high magnetization moment, and superparamagnetic properties. The effective integration of oxide nanocrystals on RGO sheets provides a new way to design semiconductor–carbon nanocomposites for nanodevices or catalytic applications.
