OBJECTIVE To describe a compact computed tomographic apparatus (Ortho-CT) for use in dental practice. METHODS Ortho-CT is a cone-beam-type of CT apparatus consisting of a multifunctional maxillofacial imaging machine (Scanora, Soredex, Helsinki, Finland) in which the film is replaced with an X-ray imaging intensifier (Hamamatsu Photonics, Hamamatsu, Japan). The region of image reconstruction is a cylinder 32 mm in height and 38 mm in diameter and the voxel is a 0.136-mm cube. Scanning is at 85 kV and 10 mA with a 1 mm Cu filter. The scan time is 17 s comparable with that required for rotational panoramic radiography. A single scan collects 512 sets of projection data through 360 degrees and the image is reconstructed by a personal computer. The time required for image reconstruction is about 10 min. RESULTS The resolution limit was about 2.0 lp mm-1 and the skin entrance dose 0.62 mGy. Comparison between effective radiation dose of CBCT and MSCT scanners for dentomaxillofacial applications.

Purpose:To evaluate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of intravascular stents in the treatment of extracranial carotid artery occlusive disease.Methods:According to protocol, stent therapy was offered to symptomatic patients with ≥ 70% arteriographically defined carotid stenoses or ulcerative lesions and, after September 1994, to asymptomatic patients with ≥ 75% stenoses. From April 1993 to September 1995, 110 nonconsecutive patients (79 males; mean age 72 years, range 45 to 85) consented to participate in the study. The majority (79 [72%]) were asymptomatic. Lesions meeting the treatment criteria were in the proximal common (n = 3); mid common (n = 12); distal common (n = 8); internal (ICA) (n = 92); and external (n = 2) carotid arteries. Seven patients had bilateral ICA stenoses, and 17 patients were treated for postsurgical recurrent disease. Bacterial meningitis in children

Cone beam CT (CBCT) is a new technique for maxillofacial imaging. We describe a reconstruction technique for radiographic examination of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) using CBCT, and we further present four cases where the technique was employed. The technique provides a complete radiographic investigation of the bony components of the TMJ. The reconstructed images are of high diagnostic quality. The examination time is shorter and the patient dose is lower than that with conventional CT. It may therefore be considered as the imaging technique of choice when investigation of bony changes of the TMJ is the task at hand.

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty was used to successfully dilate critical narrowings of the internal carotid artery caused by fibromuscular dysplasia. The technique of this new procedure is presented along with the angiographic findings and results in three patients. Angioplasty may be used as an alternative to open arteriotomy and graduated dilatation in treating stenosis due to symptomatic fibromuscular dysplasia in the immediate extracranial part of the internal carotid artery.

Bacterial meningitis in children: current concepts of neurologic management.

Spinal stenosis in children and adolescents is a rare condition that should be considered in patients with appropriate clinical signs and symptoms. We describe and discuss four cases of spinal stenosis in children and adolescents diagnosed by CT. In all these cases, CT was beneficial at demonstrating and defining the nature and location of suspected spinal stenosis.

Th e rapid , recent development of intravenous digital sub­ traction angiography has changed the general philosophy of screening for extracranial carotid artery occlusive dis­ ease. However, digital subtraction angiography equipment is currently very expensive and may remain so. If a lower cost system for good visualization of the carotid artery bifurcations by intravenous injection of contrast material were avai lable, its benefit would be obvious in this inflation­ ary era. Indeed, a prototype serial xeroradiographi c cas­ sette c hanger has been produced by Xerox Corporation which can be used in conjunction with conventional angio­ graphic equipment to demonstrate peripheral vasculature by injecting the contrast material intravenously. We have made preliminary tests of this method of visualizing the carotid artery bifurcation in 15 patients and present our experience.
