Scattering resonances are an essential tool for controlling the interactions of ultracold atoms and molecules. However, conventional Feshbach scattering resonances1, which have been extensively studied in various platforms1-7, are not expected to exist in most ultracold polar molecules because of the fast loss that occurs when two molecules approach at a close distance8-10. Here we demonstrate a new type of scattering resonance that is universal for a wide range of polar molecules. The so-called field-linked resonances11-14 occur in the scattering of microwave-dressed molecules because of stable macroscopic tetramer states in the intermolecular potential. We identify two resonances between ultracold ground-state sodium-potassium molecules and use the microwave frequencies and polarizations to tune the inelastic collision rate by three orders of magnitude, from the unitary limit to well below the universal regime. The field-linked resonance provides a tuning knob to independently control the elastic contact interaction and the dipole-dipole interaction, which we observe as a modification in the thermalization rate. Our result provides a general strategy for resonant scattering between ultracold polar molecules, which paves the way for realizing dipolar superfluids15 and molecular supersolids16, as well as assembling ultracold polyatomic molecules.

Field-linked resonances of polar molecules

Abstract Induced interactions and bound states of charge carriers immersed in a quantum medium are crucial for the investigation of quantum transport. Ultracold atom-ion systems can provide a convenient platform for studying this problem. Here, we investigate the static properties of one and two ionic impurities in a bosonic bath using quantum Monte Carlo methods. We identify three bipolaronic regimes depending on the strength of the atom-ion potential and the number of its two-body bound states: a perturbative regime resembling the situation of a pair of neutral impurities, a non-perturbative regime that loses the quasi-particle character of the former, and a many-body bound state regime that can arise only in the presence of a bound state in the two-body potential. We further reveal strong bath-induced interactions between the two ionic polarons. Our findings show that numerical simulations are indispensable for describing highly correlated impurity models.

Many-body bound states and induced interactions of charged impurities in a bosonic bath

We measure chemical reactions between a single trapped $^{174}$Yb$^+$ ion immersed in an ultracold bath of $^6$Li atoms containing trace amounts of Li$_2$ dimers. This produces LiYb$^+$ molecular ions that we detect via mass spectrometry. We explain the reaction rates by modelling the dimer density as a function of the magnetic field and obtain excellent agreement when we assume the reaction to follow the Langevin rate. Our results present a novel approach towards the creation of cold molecular ions and point to the exploration of ultracold chemistry in ion molecule collisions. What is more, with a detection sensitivity below molecule densities of $10^{14}\,\mathrm{m}^{-3}$, we provide a new method to detect low-density molecular gases.

Observation of Chemical Reactions between a Trapped Ion and Ultracold Feshbach Dimers.

Studies of chemical reactions by a single pair of atoms in a well defined quantum state constitute a corner stone in quantum chemistry. Yet, the number of demonstrated techniques which enable observation and control of a single chemical reaction is handful. Here we propose and demonstrate a new technique to study chemical reactions between an ultracold neutral atom and a cold ion using quantum logic. We experimentally study the release of hyperfine energy in a reaction between an ultracold rubidium atom and isotopes of singly ionized strontium for which we do not have experimental control. We detect the reaction outcome and measure the reaction rate of the chemistry ion by reading the motional state of a logic ion via quantum logic, in a single shot. Our work opens new avenues and extends the toolbox of studying chemical reactions, with existing experimental tools, for all atomic and molecular ions in which direct laser cooling and state detection are unavailable.

Quantum logic detection of collisions between single atom–ion pairs

A diversity of experimental techniques has been developed over the last 25 years to create samples of molecular gases at temperatures close to the Absolute Zero—here we consider samples in the range from 10s of Kelvin (cold) down to 10s of nanoKelvin (ultracold). In these exotic physical environments, a range of novel experiments can be conducted which bring high levels of control over the properties of these ‘almost stationary’ molecules, in some cases with control over single trapped molecules achievable. In this article, recent advances in this field since 2020, both in terms of the ability to produce and manipulate the molecules and understand their properties, and also in the development of new applications of these technologies, are highlighted. Applications include observing explicit ‘quantum effects’ in chemical reactivity, developing an understanding of chemistry in cold astrophysical media, the creation of exotic phases of matter, the use of trapped molecules in quantum computation and simulations systems, and the use of very high-precision spectroscopic measurements to answer fundamental physics questions beyond the standard model of particle physics.

Cold and ultracold molecules in the twenties

Controlling physical systems and their dynamics on the level of individual quanta propels both fundamental science and quantum technologies. Trapped atomic and molecular systems, neutral and charged, are at the forefront of quantum science. Their extraordinary level of control is evidenced by numerous applications in quantum information processing and quantum metrology. Studying the long-range interactions between these systems when combined in a hybrid atom-ion trap has lead to landmark results. Reaching the ultracold regime, however, where quantum mechanics dominates the interaction, e.g., giving access to controllable scattering resonances, has been elusive so far. Here we demonstrate Feshbach resonances between ions and atoms, using magnetically tunable interactions between $^{138}$Ba$^{+}$ ions and $^{6}$Li atoms. We tune the experimental parameters to probe different interaction processes - first, enhancing three-body reactions and the related losses to identify the resonances, then making two-body interactions dominant to investigate the ion's sympathetic cooling in the ultracold atomic bath. Our results provide deeper insights into atom-ion interactions, giving access to complex many-body systems and applications in experimental quantum simulation.
