A process for the production of molten crude iron and reduction gas is described wherein the molten iron and gas are formed in a smelting gasifier, to which is introduced at the upper portion thereof preheated sponge iron of particle size between 3 mm and 30 mm and coal to form a fluidized bed, and an oxygen-containing gas at the lower portion thereof, and controlling the ratio of oxygen-containing gas and coal to maintain a high temperature zone in the lower portion of the gasifier and a lower temperature zone in the upper portion thereof, the oxygen-containing gas being introduced substantially immediately above the resulting melt which is formed at the bottom of the gasifier.

There is disclosed a method and a melt-down gasifier for producing molten pig iron or steel pre-products and reduction gas. A first fluidized-bed zone is formed by coke particles, with a heavy motion of the particles, above a first blow-in plane by the addition of coal and by blowing in oxygen-containing gas. Iron sponge particles and/or pre-reduced iron ore particles with a substantial portion of particle sizes of more than 3 mm are added to the first fluidized-bed zone from above. A melt-down gasifier for carrying out the method is formed by a refractorily lined vessel having openings for the addition of coal and ferrous material, openings for the emergence of the reduction gases produced, and openings for tapping the metal melt and the slag. Pipes or nozzles enter into the meltdown gasifier above the slag level at at least two different heights.

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for raising the temperature and mixing efficiency of mainly non-combustible pulverous solid particles so high, that a desired smelting and volatilizing is achieved. The method is characterized in that the heating and mixing are carried out in at least two stages. Advantageously the reactions are made to happen in a suspension smelting furnace, such as a flash smelting furnace.

There is described a method for producing a sponge iron from iron ore, which is reduced in a reduction shaft furnace by means of a hot reducing gas to sponge iron. For this purpose, in a carburetor (2) produced, chilled, and a cyclone (12) introduced purified reducing gas with a temperature in the range between 750 and 900 ° C in the shaft furnace (1) at the level of the Bustle plane (5). Below the Bustle plane (5) reducing gas is at a temperature which is below the temperature of the introduced in the Bustle plane reducing gas, preferably introduced in the range between 650 and 750 ° C, in the shaft furnace (1). A reinforced carbon deposition is also a consequence of an increase in volume, in particular through a cross sectional enlargement of the lower part of the shaft furnace.
