Precision Assembly of Complex Cellular Microenvironments using Holographic Optical Tweezers
Glen R. Kirkham,Emily Britchford,Thomas Upton,James S. Ware,Graham M. Gibson,Yannick R Devaud,Martin Ehrbar,Miles J. Padgett,Stephanie Allen,Lee D.K. Buttery,Kevin M. Shakesheff +10 more
TL;DR: The application of holographic optical tweezers-based micromanipulation will enable novel insights into biological microenvironments by allowing researchers to form complex architectures with sub-micron precision of cells, matrices and molecules.
High-resolution daily profiles of tissue adrenal steroids by portable automated collection
Thomas Upton,Eder Zavala,Paal Methlie,Olle Kämpe,Stylianos Tsagarakis,Marianne Øksnes,Sophie Bensing,Dimitra Vassiliadi,Marianne Aardal Grytaas,Ileana Ruxandra Botusan,Grethe Å Ueland,Katarina Berinder,Kateřina Šimůnková,M. Balomenaki,Dimitris Margaritopoulos,Nina Henne,Georgina M Russell,Eystein S. Husebye,Stafford L. Lightman +18 more
TL;DR: Charneski et al. as mentioned in this paper presented a waist belt for minimally invasive, dense monitoring of diurnal variability in adrenal steroid hormones in healthy ambulatory adults, using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to obtain high-resolution profiles of tissue adrenal steroids.

Modelling the dynamic interaction of systemic inflammation and the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis during and after cardiac surgery
D. Galvis,Eder Zavala,Jamie J. Walker,Thomas Upton,Stafford L. Lightman,Gianni D Angelini,Jon Evans,Chris A Rogers,Kirsty Phillips,Ben Gibbison +9 more
TL;DR: This work characterize the inflammatory, ACTH and cortisol responses of patients undergoing cardiac surgery and shows that the HPA axis response can be classified into one of three phenotypes: single-pulse, two-Pulse and multiple-p Pulse dynamics, and develops a mathematical model of cortisol secretion and metabolism that predicts the physiological mechanisms responsible for these different phenotypes.

Analysis of wearable time series data in endocrine and metabolic research
Azure D. Grant,Thomas Upton,John R. Terry,Benjamin L. Smarr,Eder Zavala +4 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors discuss how combining minimally invasive, high-frequency biosampling technologies with wearable devices can assist the development of hormonal surrogates, which can support the diagnosis and management of endocrine and metabolic conditions.

Localized Induction of Gene Expression in Embryonic Stem Cell Aggregates Using Holographic Optical Tweezers to Create Biochemical Gradients.
Glen R. Kirkham,James S. Ware,Thomas Upton,Stephanie Allen,Kevin M. Shakesheff,Lee D.K. Buttery +5 more
- 01 Jan 2020
TL;DR: The construction of a precisely patterned 3D microenvironment and biochemical gradient model consisting of mouse embryoid bodies and polymer microparticles loaded with retinoic acid, embedded in a hydrogel is shown.
