Environmental social work and related terms have been used widely to describe an approach to social work practice that is founded on ecological justice principles. However, practice applications of environmental social work are scant and there are various terms and a range of interpretations of the practice that exist. Using a concept analysis framework, we identify the attributes and characteristics of environmental social work, develop an operational definition and use a case study to illustrate the practice of environmental social work. In this way, we seek to improve clarity, consistency and understanding of environmental social work practice among educators, practitioners and researchers. In essence, environmental social work assists humanity to create and sustain a biodiverse planetary ecosystem and does this by adapting existing social work methods to promote societal change.

Environmental Social Work: A Concept Analysis

The link between domestic violence and animal abuse has now been well established, indicating that where there is one form of abuse, there is often the other. Research on this link, however, has almost exclusively focused on heterosexual cisgender people’s relationships. Lacking, then, is an exploration of the possibly unique links between domestic violence and animal abuse in the context of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people’s relationships. In this article we adopt a feminist intersectional approach informed by Critical Animal Studies to advocate for a non-pathologising approach to understanding LGBT people’s relationships with regard to the link between domestic violence and animal abuse.

Social work, as a profession, emerged from the expression of care, humanity and social concerns and issues affecting Western societies (Payne, 2005), and it has long been recognised that social workers demonstrate a genuine concern for the wellbeing of all (Dubois & Miley, 2013) — a concern that emanates from, and is guided by, the professional values of social work. However, it has been argued that the professional social work guiding core values have mostly been human-centred. Within this context, there has been pressing call for a paradigm shift from anthropocentric social work (Besthorn, 2002, 2012, 2013; Coates, 2003; Gray, Coates, & Hetherington, 2013; Ryan, 2011, 2013). In particular, Gray and Coates (2012) opine that social workers should be reminded that they have duties, obligations, responsibilities and commitments to the nonhuman world also.

Fulfilling the Fundamentals of Life: A Grounded Theory of the Process of Human-Horse Relationship Development

Social work is traditionally human-centered in practice, even though for many the bond between humans and animals is the most fundamental of daily-lived experiences. The intent of this paper is to reflect on the predominant humanistic basis of social work and to consider the growing evidence for developing a wider perspective to incorporate the human-animal connection into social work practice. Joanne Emmens (2007:9) observes that the human-animal bond is considered by some as ‘…too mainstream (in the sense of being lightweight, cliche or sentimental), or as not mainstream enough…as substantial material worthy of study.’ In this article we argue that the human-animal bond is neither sentimental nor fringe and that our attitudes toward this relationship is based on a construction of western thought. To support this we offer a review of literature that provides evidence of good practice that can move social work beyond a purely humanistic approach to a more holistic view resulting in a more comprehensive toolkit for practice. We explore the literature and practice surrounding the place of animals in social work, both in New Zealand and internationally. In addition, we identify some of the ways the human-animal bond is currently utilised in rehabilitation, therapy, as animal assistants and as an indicator of domestic violence within New Zealand. We argue that this area of research and practice is highly relevant for social work as evidence-based practice. The paper concludes by offering some suggestions for discussion within the social work profession, and considerations for social work educators, researchers and theorists.

At rst glance one could easily be led to believe that moral consideration of 
the non-human world has nothing whatsoever to do with social work, that 
the discipline’s rationale and function is unreservedly and properly human 
centred. This view would, however, be in stark contrast to the reawakened 
concern and respect for the non-human world in Western societies during 
the twentieth and twenty-rst centuries, which has been the seminal catalyst 
in the generation of contemporary environmental and social movements, 
placing considerations for the natural world onto the political agenda (Hay, 
2002). From fringe beginnings, these concerns have gradually come to be 
embraced by the mainstream, to the extent that it is now increasingly rare 
to nd individuals who do not consider themselves to be solicitous about 
the natural world. Human understanding and appreciation of the natural 
environment and non-human animals has been signicantly enhanced and 
elevated by the disciplines of ecology and ethology respectively.
