Allyn Smith,Michael A. Strauss,Zlatan Tsvetanov,Alan Uomoto,Donald G. York,W. Zheng +29 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a preliminary spectral classification system for L and T dwarfs is presented based entirely on four spectral indices in the 1-2.5 μm interval, two of these indices are derived from water absorption bands at 1.15 and 1.4 μm, the latter of which shows a smooth increase in depth through the L andT sequences and can be used to classify both spectral types.

Near-Infrared Photometry and Spectroscopy of L and T Dwarfs: the Effects of Temperature, Clouds, and Gravity
Gillian R. Knapp,S. K. Leggett,Xiaohui Fan,Mark S. Marley,Thomas R. Geballe,David A. Golimowski +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, photometry and spectroscopy for a sample of newly identified L and T dwarfs and known dwarfs from the SDSS and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) was performed using four infrared indices.
