Prevalence and clinical relevance of helminth co-infections among tuberculosis patients in urban Tanzania.
Francis Apolinary Mhimbira,Jerry Hella,Jerry Hella,Jerry Hella,Khadija Said,Khadija Said,Khadija Said,Lujeko Kamwela,Mohamed Sasamalo,Mohamed Sasamalo,Mohamed Sasamalo,Thomas Maroa,Magreth Chiryamkubi,Grace Mhalu,Grace Mhalu,Grace Mhalu,Christian Schindler,Klaus Reither,Klaus Reither,Klaus Reither,Stefanie Knopp,Stefanie Knopp,Stefanie Knopp,Jürg Utzinger,Jürg Utzinger,Sebastien Gagneux,Lukas Fenner +26 more
TL;DR: A role for schistosomiasis in modulating the pathogenesis of human TB is suggested and treatment of helminths should be considered in clinical management of TB and TB control programs.
Diagnostic delay and associated factors among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Khadija Said,Khadija Said,Khadija Said,Jerry Hella,Jerry Hella,Jerry Hella,Grace Mhalu,Grace Mhalu,Grace Mhalu,Mary Chiryankubi,Edward Masika,Thomas Maroa,Francis Mhimbira,Francis Mhimbira,Francis Mhimbira,Neema Kapalata,Lukas Fenner +16 more
TL;DR: TB diagnostic delay was common in Dar es Salaam, and was more likely among patients without prior use of medication and presenting with hemoptysis, while geographical distance to HCFs may have an impact on health-seeking behaviour.
Using population-specific add-on polymorphisms to improve genotype imputation in underrepresented populations
Z. M. Xu,Z. M. Xu,Sina Rüeger,Sina Rüeger,Michaela Zwyer,Michaela Zwyer,Daniela Brites,Daniela Brites,Hellen Hiza,Hellen Hiza,Hellen Hiza,Miriam Reinhard,Miriam Reinhard,Sonia Borrell,Sonia Borrell,Isihaka F,Temba H,Thomas Maroa,Naftari R,Jerry Hella,Mohamed Sasamalo,Klaus Reither,Klaus Reither,Damien Portevin,Damien Portevin,Gagneux S,Gagneux S,Jacques Fellay,Jacques Fellay,Jacques Fellay +29 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed to sequence the full genome of a small subset of an underrepresented study cohort to inform the selection of population-specific add-on SNPs, such that the remaining array-genotyped cohort could be more accurately imputed.

Home-Based and Facility-Based Directly Observed Therapy of Tuberculosis Treatment under Programmatic Conditions in Urban Tanzania.
Francis Mhimbira,Francis Mhimbira,Francis Mhimbira,Jerry Hella,Jerry Hella,Jerry Hella,Thomas Maroa,Shadrack Kisandu,Magreth Chiryamkubi,Khadija Said,Khadija Said,Khadija Said,Grace Mhalu,Grace Mhalu,Grace Mhalu,Abdallah Mkopi,Beatrice Mutayoba,Klaus Reither,Klaus Reither,Klaus Reither,Sebastien Gagneux,Sebastien Gagneux,Lukas Fenner +22 more
TL;DR: TB patients under home-based DOT had more frequently risk factors of death such as older age, HIV infection and sputum smear-negative TB, and had higher mortality compared to patients under facility-baseddot.
Genome-to-genome analysis reveals associations between human and mycobacterial genetic variation in tuberculosis patients from Tanzania
Z. M. Xu,Michaela Zwyer,Daniela Brites,Hellen Hiza,Mohamed Sasamalo,Miriam Reinhard,Anna Doetsch,Sonia Borrell,Olivier Naret,S. RuÌeger,Dylan Lawless,Faima Isihaka,Hosiana Temba,Thomas Maroa,Rastard Naftari,Christian Beisel,Jerry Hella,Klaus Reither,Damien Portevin,Sebastien Gagneux,J. Fellay +20 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors identified two pairs of human and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) genomic data from 1000 Tanzanian TB patients through a genome-to-genome approach, and found that one of the human genetic variants maps to the intron of PRDM15, a gene involved in apoptosis regulation.
