This article describes the control-value theory of achievement emotions and its implications for educational research and practice. The theory provides an integrative framework for analyzing the antecedents and effects of emotions experienced in achievement and academic settings. It is based on the premise that appraisals of control and values are central to the arousal of achievement emotions, including activity-related emotions such as enjoyment, frustration, and boredom experienced at learning, as well as outcome emotions such as joy, hope, pride, anxiety, hopelessness, shame, and anger relating to success or failure. Corollaries of the theory pertain to the multiplicity and domain specificity of achievement emotions; to their more distal individual and social antecedents, their effects on engagement and achievement, and the reciprocal linkages between emotions, antecedents and effects; to the regulation and development of these emotions; and to their relative universality across genders and cultures. Implications addressed concern the conceptual integration of emotion, motivation, and cognition, and the need to advance mixed-method paradigms. In closing, implications for educational practice are discussed.

The Control-Value Theory of Achievement Emotions: Assumptions, Corollaries, and Implications for Educational Research and Practice

A motivational science perspective on student motivation in learning and teaching contexts is developed that highlights 3 general themes for motivational research. The 3 themes include the importance of a general scientific approach for research on student motivation, the utility of multidisciplinary perspectives, and the importance of use-inspired basic research on motivation. Seven substantive questions are then suggested as important directions for current and future motivational science research efforts. They include (1) What do students want? (2) What motivates students in classrooms? (3) How do students get what they want? (4) Do students know what they want or what motivates them? (5) How does motivation lead to cognition and cognition to motivation? (6) How does motivation change and develop? and (7) What is the role of context and culture? Each of the questions is addressed in terms of current knowledge claims and future directions for research in motivational science.

Positive emotions in education.

Emotions are ubiquitous in school settings. Learning and achievement are of fundamental importance for students’ educational careers, implying that achievement-related emotions such as 
enjoyment of learning, hope, pride, anger, anxiety, or boredom are frequent, pervasive, manifold, 
and oft en intense in academic situations. Th e social nature of these situations also contributes 
to the emotional character of school settings; emotions such as admiration, contempt, or envy 
likely play a major role in these settings as well (Weiner, 2007). Furthermore, adding to their 
relevance, emotions are functionally important for students’ motivation, cognitive performance, 
and personality development. Adaptive emotions like enjoyment of learning help to envision 
goals and challenges, open the mind to creative problem-solving, and lay the groundwork for 
self-regulation (Ashby, Isen, & Turken, 1999; Pekrun, Goetz, Titz, & Perry, 2002a). Maladaptive 
emotions like excessive anxiety, hopelessness, or boredom, on the other hand, are detrimental 
to academic attainment, induce students to drop out of school, and impact negatively on their 
psychological and physical health (Zeidner, 1998).

What actually is enjoyment, or more generally, what is an emotion? Why would it be wise to make learning a joy, or in other words, IS it actually beneficial for students to enjoy learning? Should students not rather experience a certain level of allxiely in order to make an effort to avoid poor pelionrumceQ How can we "measure" the extent of students' learning-related enjoyment? \Vhat about emotions other than enjoyment and anxiety in the context of learning and achievement? And last but not least: What can a teacher do in order to make learning a joy" Depending on what perspective one takes, be it economicaL philosophical. educational, or psychological, the answers may be quite different.

Emotions, learning and achievement from an educational-psychological perspective

Abstract This study analyzes the effects of individual achievement and achievement level of student reference group on test anxiety in a national sample of 769 gifted Israeli students (grade levels 4–9), which was previously investigated by Zeidner and Schleyer (1999a). We hypothesized that when controlling for individual achievement, students’ experiences of test anxiety should increase with the increasing ability level of their peer reference group. It was assumed that this effect was largely mediated by reference group effects on academic self-concept (big-fish-little-pond effect). Zeidner and Schleyer found that gifted students within a gifted peer reference group showed higher levels of test anxiety than gifted students within a non-gifted peer reference group. Of note, the present study focused exclusively on gifted students attending special gifted classes. The main research question was whether or not the assumed effects of individual and class achievement can be found for gifted students in special gifted classes when taking the variance of achievement level (grades) of the special gifted classes into account. Using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) methodology, the assumed effects were vindicated for this special group of high ability students. Thus, in line with previous results, the Worry component of test anxiety was more highly reactive to the effects of individual achievement than the Emotionality component. Also, in line with our theoretical assumptions, achievement/anxiety relations were largely mediated by the effects of academic self-concept.
