An electro-mechanical surgical device includes: a housing; an elongated shaft extending from the housing, a distal end of the elongated shaft being detachably coupleable to a surgical instrument; at least two axially rotatable drive shafts disposed within the elongated shaft, a distal end of each of the drive shafts being configured to couple with the surgical instrument; a steering cable arrangement, the steering cable arrangement being configured to steer the distal end of the elongated shaft; and a motor system disposed within the housing, the motor system being configured to drive the drive shafts and the steering cable arrangement. A control system may be provided for controlling the motor system. A remote control unit may also be provided for controlling the motor system via the control system. Sensors, such as optical or Hall-effect devices, may be provided for determining the position of the elements of the surgical instrument based on the detected rotation of the drive shafts. A memory unit stores a plurality of operating programs or algorithms, each corresponding to a type of surgical instrument attachable to the electro-mechanical surgical device. The control system reads or selects from the plurality of operating programs or algorithms, the operating program or algorithm corresponding to the type of surgical instrument attached to the electro-mechanical surgical device.

Electro-mechanical surgical device

An electro-mechanical surgical device, system and/or method may include a housing, at least two opposing jaw, and at least one electrical contact associated with at least one of the jaws. The electrical contact may include at least one of a bipolar electrical contact and an ultrasonic electrical contact. The electrical contact may be a row of electrodes located on one or all of the jaws. A sensor may also be associated with any tissue located between the jaws to sense and report the temperature of that tissue. A piercable ampulla containing fluid may also be placed on at least one of the jaws so that the fluid is releasable when the jaws are in closed position and the electrode(s) pass through the tissue into the piercable ampulla.

Bipolar or ultrasonic surgical device

The present invention, in accordance with various embodiments thereof, relates to a surgical device for at least one of cutting and stapling a section of tissue. The surgical device includes a housing including at least two drivers. The surgical device also includes an anvil mechanically attachable to the housing and moveable relative to the housing between an open position and a closed position. The first driver operates to move the anvil relative to the housing to an intermediate position between the open position and the closed position. The second driver operates to move at least a portion of the housing relative to the anvil between the intermediate position and the closed position.

Surgical cutting and stapling device

A stapling device for use as an attachment to an electromechanical device driver comprises an upper jaw and a lower jaw, the upper jaw having staple guides corresponding to one or more staples in a removable staple tray disposed within a lower jaw, whereby a wedge having a threaded bore travels upon a matching threaded shaft in a channel disposed in the lower jaw behind the staple tray, such that rotation of the threaded shaft causes movement of the wedge through the channel while a sloped surface of the wedge contacts the staples to push the staples against the staples guides, closing the staples.

Surgical clamping, cutting and stapling device

A stapler attachment (100) for use with an electromechanical device driver (50) comprises a staple holding member (118) which is spring mounted to a staple closing member (124), which is, in turn, mounted to a threaded driver element (116) concentrically mounted about a threaded shaft (112) such that staple closing member (124) and the staple holding member (118) can be advanced and retracted along a track within a housing (102). A staple (130) is advanced by the rotation of the threaded shaft (112) until the staple holding member (118) is stopped against an opening lip (110) formed in an opening (108) at the distal staple discharging end (104) of the housing (102). At this position, the prongs of the staple (130) have been advanced out of the distal staple discharging end (104) and into the tissue to be joined. The staple closing member (124) continues to advance as the spring (126) between the staple holding member (118) and the staple closing member (124) compresses. This advancement permits the staple closing member (124) to deform the staple (130) into a closed D-shape conformation. The staple (130) is released from the attachment (100) through the distal staple discharging end (104) of the housing (102) upon further advancement of the staple closing member (124). Reverse rotation of the threaded shaft (112) retracts the staple closing member (124) and staple holding member (118) into a staple receiving position where a spring-loaded staple dispenser (148) pushes one of a plurality of staples (146) in a staple cartridge (144) into a staple carrying groove (140) of a staple carrying element of the staple holding member (118), in preparation for a subsequent procedure.

A tissue stapling attachment for use with an electromechanical driver device

A suture guide, and fastener (100) includes a suture retaining device (102) which orients, secures one or more suture strands (104) therein, receives energy applied to the strands (104) to bond them within the suture retaining device (102). The fastener becomes integral with the bonded sutures, and may be made of a material similar to the suture material which melts upon the application of energy thereto. Alternatively, the fastener (100) may be made of a different material which remains intact upon application of bonding energy to the sutures. When ultrasonic energy is applied, the fastener (100) may function as a stationary ultrasonic weld anvil. Other types of energy, such as laser, thermal or chemical, may be applied to the suture strands (104) to effect bonding.
