A survey of H alpha emission in 320 spiral galaxies in 8 nearby clusters shows an enhancement of circumnuclear starburst emission with increasingly rich clusters. These observations provide convincing evidence that spirals have been transformed into S0s in clusters predominantly by tidal forces, a picture fully in accord with the most recent numerical simulations of clusters. For the richest clusters, the enhancement of starburst emission is greater than would be expected on the basis of increasing galaxy surface density alone, which may explain the anomalous result for the type-galaxy surface density relation found for low richness clusters at intermediate redshift.

The Dependence of Tidally-Induced Star Formation on Cluster Density

We present a new sample of 415 bright QSOs and Seyfert~1 nuclei drawn from the Hamburg/ESO survey (HES). The sample is spectroscopically 99 % complete and well-defined in terms of flux and redshift limits. Optical magnitudes are in the interval 13 < B_J < 17.5, redshifts range within 0< z < 3.2. More than 50 % of the objects in the sample are new discoveries. We describe the selection techniques and discuss sample completeness and potential selection effects. There is no evidence for redshift-dependent variations of completeness; in particular, low-redshift QSOs - notoriously missed by other optical surveys - are abundant in this sample, since no discrimination against extended sources is imposed. For the same reason, the HES is not biased against multiply imaged QSOs due to gravitational lensing. The sample forms the largest homogeneous set of bright QSOs currently in existence, useful for a variety of statistical studies. We have redetermined the bright part of the optical quasar number-magnitude relation. We confirm that the Palomar-Green survey is significantly incomplete, but that its degree of incompleteness has recently been overestimated.

The Hamburg/ESO survey for bright QSOs. III. A large flux-limited sample of QSOs

Aims. The aim is to study structure and polarization properties of the stars and planet systems in the active Orion H II-region. Methods. We performed AO-assisted high-resolution imaging polarimetry on selected Orion proplyds close to the Trapezium stars in the J, H, and K bands. Differential polarimetric images of one of the largest and brightest proplyds are interpreted using 3D radiation transfer simulations based on the Monte Carlo method. Results. Although not fully resolvable by ground-based observations, the circumstellar material can be mapped with polarimetry. We present constraints on the disk parameters of the giant proplyd 177-341. We tested whether dust models with different grain size distributions could explain the observed extent of the polarization patterns and find that simple models with larger grains will not reproduce the spectral polarization behavior. Conclusions. The technique of polarimetric differential imaging (PDI) in the NIR provides a good opportunity to study the structure of the Orion proplyds.

Near-infrared polarization images of the Orion proplyds

Turbulence in Earth's atmosphere severely limits the image quality of ground-based telescopes. With the technique of Adaptive Optics, the induced distortions of the light can be measured and corrected in real-time, regaining nearly diffraction-limited performance. Unfortunately, when using a single guide star to measure the distortions, the correction is only useful within a small angular area centered on the guide star. The first part of this thesis presents a laboratory setup, which uses four guide stars to measure the turbulence-induced distortions and one deformable mirror to correct the most turbulent layer. With such a Layer-Oriented Ground-Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO) system, the area of useful correction is significantly increased. The system is characterized in static and dynamic operation, and the influence of non-conjugated turbulent layers, the effect of brightness variations of the guide-stars and the impact of misalignments are studied. Furthermore, calibration strategies and the performance of the Kalman control algorithm are examined. The second part of this thesis focuses on SCIDAR measurements of the atmospheric turbulence above Mt. Graham. This dataset provides for the first time a statistical and thorough analysis of the vertical turbulence structure above the LBT site. Based on 16 nights of measurements, spread over one year, Mt. Graham appears to be an excellent site for an astronomical observatory. By extending an analytical model, describing the filtering of the turbulence-induced distortions by an AO system, we calculate performance expectations of the LINC-NIRVANA instrument. In particular, the optimal conjugation heights of the deformable mirrors are studied. Furthermore, we present a new method to measure the atmospheric turbulence near the ground with 40 times increased vertical resolution, compared to standard SCIDAR. First on-sky results demonstrate the power of this technique.

We present the latest status of the fringe detecting algorithms for the LINC-NIRVANA FFTS (Fringe and Flexure
Tracker System). The piston and PSF effects of the system from the top of the atmosphere through the telescopes and
multi-conjugate AO systems to the detector are discussed and the resulting requirements for the FFTS outlined.

Fringe detection and piston variability in LINC-NIRVANA

This thesis consists of two parts. The first part reports on the development of a fringe tracking system for LINC-NIRVANA, the near-infrared homothetic imaging camera for the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). LINC-NIRVANA allows for a coherent combination of the light entering the two primary mirrors. The fringe pattern in the focal plane is required to be stable in time to preserve the high spatial frequency information in long exposure images. Atmospheric differential piston causes the position of the fringes to change with time. A fringe tracker is a servo system that measures and corrects for atmospheric differential piston in real-time. In the first part, numerical simulations of atmospheric turbulence are used to investigate the problem of angular anisoplanatism of differential piston. The fringe tracking concept and the top-level requirements are introduced, followed by a presentation of the mechanical design of the system. This design includes a solution for a device that is capable of positioning a detector with high precision within a cryogenic environment. A fitting algorithm determines the amount of differential piston in the point-spread function of a reference target. The performance of this algorithm under different signal-to-noise conditions is investigated. First polychromatic fringes obtained with a testbed interferometer conclude the first part. Measurements of millimeter CO transitions in extragalactic targets are the basis for the two observational studies in the second part of this thesis. The molecular gas content in low-luminosity QSO host galaxies is investigated and discussed together with far-infrared data. Unlike in most published studies, a far-infrared selection criterion was not applied. It is shown that the majority of low-luminosity QSO host galaxies is rich in molecular gas. These objects show different CO emission properties, depending on their central activity. The second study deals with a potential dependency of the molecular gas content in cluster galaxies on their distance to the center of the cluster. A deficiency of molecular gas in galaxies that are located in the vicinity of the center is indicated in a sample of Abell 262 galaxies. A model is presented that predicts a drop of gas and dust and explains it with the stripping of cirrus-like clouds.
