Experience with process migration in the Charlotte distributed operating system is discussed. Charlotte's migration facility is a fairly elaborate addition to the underlying kernel and utility-process base. It separates policy from mechanism. An overview is given of Charlotte, its process migration facility, and issues encountered that have a general application for any such facility. In the discussion of each issue, alternative design approaches adopted by other process migration facilities are presented. This account is intended to help researchers contemplating the addition of a process migration facility as well as those designing other operating system facilities that might need to interact later with added process migration facilities. >

Designing a process migration facility: the Charlotte experience

It is suggested that a functional model of monitoring in terms of the generation, processing, dissemination, and presentation of information can help determine the facilities needed to design and construct distributed systems. Implementation issues are also discussed, with attention given to the intrusiveness of monitoring systems and object-based implementation. It is concluded that generic monitoring services are important tools for managing distributed systems and for debugging during system development. Monitoring services may also be needed as part of the application itself, such as in process control and factory automation. >

Monitoring distributed systems

It is argued that multiuser distributed memory multiprocessors with dynamic mapping of the application onto the hardware structure are needed to make available the advantages of this type of architecture to a wider user community. It is shown, based on an abstract model, that such architectures may be used efficiently. It is also shown that future developments in interconnection hardware will allow the fulfillment of the assumptions made in the model. Since a dynamic load balancing procedure will be one of the most important components in the systems software, the elements of its implementation are discussed and first results based on a testbed implementation are presented. >

Load balancing in distributed memory multiprocessors

Advanced processor and machine architectures need optimizing compilers to be efficiently programmed in high level languages. Therefore the need for source level debuggers that can handle optimized programs is rising. One difficulty in debugging optimized code arises from the problem to determine the values of source code variables. To ensure correct debugger behaviour with optimized programs, the debugger not only has to determine the variable's storage location or associated register. It must also verify that the variable is current, i.e. the value determined from that location is really the value that the variable would have in unoptimized code. We will deduce requirements on algorithms for currentness determination and present an algorithm meeting this requirements that is more general than previous work. We will also give first experiences with an implementation. To our knowledge this is the first implementation of a currentness determination algorithm for globally optimized code.

Debugging of globally optimized programs using data flow analysis

We present a graphical programming environment called TRAPPER™ (TRAffonic1 Parallel Programming EnviRonment). TRAPPER supports the development of industrial applications which require high computing power. The programming environment is based on the programming model of communicating sequential processes. TRAPPER contains tools for the design, mapping, visualization and optimization of parallel systems. The Designtool supports a hybrid program development, where the parallel process structure is described using a graphical representation and the sequential behavior is described using textual representations. The configuration of the target hardware and the mapping of the application onto the configured hardware is supported by the Configtool. During run-time, the monitoring-system records software events like interprocess-communication and measures the computation and communication loads of the underlying hardware. The run-time behavior of the software is animated by the Vistool, the load behavior of the hardware is displayed by the Perftool. The first target systems are Transputer-based systems.

An Integrated Environment for Programming Distributed Memory Multiprocessors

A survey on the TOPSYS (TOols for Parallel SYStems) project at the Department of Computer Science at Technical University of Munich is presented. Within this project, an integrated tool environment for increasing programmer productivity when using and programming parallel computers is developed. The TOPSYS tool environment offers tools for specification, mapping, debugging, testing, performance analysis, graphical program animation and dynamic loadbalancing of parallel programs. In addition to these tools a distributed operating system kernel and a synthetic workload generator has been developed. Apart from the integrated hierarchical architecture, the major features of the TOPSYS environment are the support of different monitoring techniques, easy adaptability, high portability and a common graphic user interface for all tools. After the description of the project goals, the major design concepts and the state of the project we describe a first application of the TOPSYS tools.

The TOPSYS architecture

The paper presents an operating system kernel for highly parallel supercomputers, which was implemented on an iPSC/2 Hypercube with 32 processors. The kernel offers a process model, which is well suited for most partitioning strategies of parallel algorithms. The base for the efficiency of this object oriented, global, and dynamic programming concept are advances in communication network technologies (virtual fully connection) of some new parallel supercomputers. After presenting the functionality and the implementation of MMK (Multiprocessor Multitasking Kernel), the paper reports on an improved programming methodology based on a combination of data and task partitioning which leads to efficient computations on virtual fully connected highly parallel machines. MMK is an integral part of the TOPSYS-project (TOols for Parallel SYStems) and all tools support the MMK programming model.
