Health effects of transport noise

This initiative seeks to attain a harmonious equilibrium of regional environmental pressures and improve resource utilization efficiency within the context of habitat and environmental preservation. The escalating urban population exposure underscores the significance of restoring human settlements, emerging as a critical concern in urban planning and development. However, a notable deficiency exists in both theoretical foundations and methodologies for identifying cities requiring greater support for environmental restoration. The evaluation of ecological compensation priority has thus become pivotal in accomplishing this objective. Consequently, this study endeavors to elucidate the research paradigm surrounding urban ecological compensation priority and proffer a framework for assessing and analyzing the spatial characteristics of such priority in China. Employing the meta-analysis method, the study established an evaluation index system for ecological protection importance (EPI) to delineate ecological compensation priority. Leveraging data sourced from literature findings and publicly available data from Google Earth Engine, an evaluation of EPI subsystems (HSEQ and ecological sensitivity) ensued via the application of a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model. Ultimately, the EPI value was computed using a coupling coordination degree model, facilitating the determination of ecological compensation priorities for Chinese cities. The results showed that (1) Most cities displayed both low-grade human settlement environmental quality (HSEQ) and ecological sensitivity, especially about 59.8% cities in lowest grade HSEQ. And they showed aggregated distribution from both the aspects of the HSEQ(Moran’I = 0.16) and the eco-sensitivity(Moran’I = 0.297). (2) 53.5%(n = 53) cities in low compensation priority and 38.4%(n = 36) in medium compensation priority, only 8.1%(n = 8) cities in high compensation priority. (3) 83.75% cities accorded with the feature that cities with obvious population growth could upgrade the compensation priority. It indicates that cities and urban agglomerations with potential for population growth should receive more attention. This study presents an analytical framework for urban ecological compensation, aiming to offer valuable insights for urban HSEQ policy decisions related to urban ecological management. 

An evaluation framework for urban ecological compensation priority in China based on meta-analysis and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation

The rapid rise of shared electric scooter (E-Scooter) systems offers urban areas a new micro-mobility solution. The focus on short-distance travel has made it a competitive option for addressing first-/last-mile travel needs. Nevertheless, its role as a first-/last-mile solution was understudied due to the lack of fine-grained trip data. This study aims at exploring the integration of shared E-Scooters with public transportation systems. Specifically, it compared the use of shared E-Scooters against shared bikes and taxis for connecting trips from/to metro stations. We analyzed massive amounts of trip-related data extracted through APIs. Multinomial logistic regression models were developed to uncover how the mode choices from/to metro stations vary in different contexts. The results show that the use of shared E-Scooters to connect trips from/to metro stations can be notably different from shared bikes and taxis. The preference of shared E-Scooters will vary depending on the land use and time period.

Sensing noise exposure and its inequality based on noise complaint data through vision-language hybrid method

The study determined the impact of restrictions introduced by the Ministry of Health in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic on traffic and sound pressure levels in the university building and its immediate vicinity. Mickiewicza Street was selected for the study. It is one of the city's busiest streets, located relatively close to the old historic center, and is the main artery connecting the north and south of the city. There are residential buildings on this street, but primarily offices and institutions, as well as schools and universities. Noise near the street and in buildings located relatively close to the road can be a serious problem in places where peace is required (e.g., libraries, reading rooms, university halls). Therefore, the acoustic comfort needed in these places may be disturbed, and the perception of knowledge acquisition may be limited. The aim of the work was achieved through measurements and analysis of street traffic intensity and sound pressure levels, taking into account pandemic restrictions. Then, statistical analyses were performed, which showed significant variability in traffic intensity and sound pressure values in individual periods of the pandemic. The pandemic's beginning was mainly characterized by a significant decrease in the above data, deviating from the norm. The impact of COVID-19 restrictions on road traffic and noise pollution of the urban street, a case study from Krakow, Poland

From an environmental equity perspective, the aim of this paper is twofold. First, we want to verify to what extent vulnerable population groups resided in areas exposed to high levels of aircraft noise before and during the COVID-19 pandemic (2019 and 2020) in the Montréal census metropolitan area. Second, we want to identify whether the use of an aircraft noise indicator rather than another generates significant variations in the results and consequently in terms of affected areas and populations. With the IMPACT web-application, we model aircraft noise contours from three cumulative (Lden, Ldn, Laeq,24h) and a single-event (LAmax) metrics. The model’s input data are retrieved by a website for flight tracking. Next, four variables are extracted from the 2016 Statistics Canada census at a fine scale level (dissemination areas): that is, the percentages of low-income individuals, visible minorities, children under 15 years old, and individuals aged 65 and over. The results show a significant drop in population exposed to aircraft noise in 2020 compared to 2019. In addition, the estimates of populations impacted by aircraft noise differ from one indicator to the next. The logistic regression models indicate that the inequities are inconsistent between cumulative and single-event metrics.
