Heterogeneous atypical cell populations are present in blood of metastatic breast cancer patients
Maryam B. Lustberg,Priya Balasubramanian,Brandon Miller,Alejandra Garcia-Villa,Clayton Deighan,Yongqi Wu,Sarah Carothers,Michael Berger,Bhuvaneswari Ramaswamy,Erin Macrae,Robert Wesolowski,Rachel M. Layman,Ewa Mrozek,Xueliang Pan,Thomas A. Summers,Charles L. Shapiro,Jeffrey J. Chalmers +16 more
TL;DR: This prospective trial characterized CTCs as well as other circulating cell populations in blood samples from women with metastatic breast cancer without EpCAM-dependent enrichment and/or isolation technology and found that atypical cells that are CK + EpCAM − circulating in their blood are associated with worse overall survival.
Colorectal cancer biomarkers and the potential role of cancer stem cells.
Russell C. Langan,John E. Mullinax,Manish T. Raiji,Trevor Upham,Thomas A. Summers,Alexander Stojadinovic,Itzhak Avital +6 more
TL;DR: It is hypothesized that CRC stem cell markers (CRCSC) can identify a group of patients whom are at increased risk for recurrence or progression of disease, and if proven correct, these CRCSC biomarkers may herald a paradigm shift in the treatment of this deadly disease.
RRx-001: a systemically non-toxic M2-to-M1 macrophage stimulating and prosensitizing agent in Phase II clinical trials.
Bryan Oronsky,Ramasamy Paulmurugan,Kira Foygel,Jan Scicinski,Susan J. Knox,Donna M. Peehl,Hongjuan Zhao,Shoucheng Ning,Pedro Cabrales,Thomas A. Summers,Tony R. Reid,William L. Fitch,Michelle M. Kim,Jane B. Trepel,Min-Jung Lee,Santosh Kesari,Nacer Abrouk,Regina M. Day,Arnold L. Oronsky,Carolyn M. Ray,Corey A. Carter +20 more
TL;DR: RRx-001 is macrophage-stimulating agent with the potential to synergize with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy while simultaneously protecting normal tissues from their cytotoxic effects, and may be used to treat a broad spectrum of malignancies, if it is approved in the future.
Circulating Tumor DNA to Monitor Therapy for Aggressive B-Cell Lymphomas
TL;DR: Molecular monitoring of ctDNA has vaulted into the spotlight as a promising non-invasive tool with immediate clinical impact on monitoring for recurrence after therapy prior to clinical symptoms and needs to be investigated as a tool for response-adapted therapy and as a marker of minimal residual disease upon completion of therapy in aggressive B-cell lymphomas.

Delayed Captopril Administration Mitigates Hematopoietic Injury in a Murine Model of Total Body Irradiation
Elizabeth A McCart,Young Hoon Lee,Jyoti K. Jha,Ognoon Mungunsukh,W. Bradley Rittase,Thomas A. Summers,Jeannie M. Muir,Regina M. Day +7 more
TL;DR: Low dose captopril administered as late as 48 h post-TBI for only two weeks improves survival that is associated with hematopoietic recovery and reduced inflammatory response, suggesting that captoprill may be an ideal countermeasure to mitigate H-ARS following accidental radiation exposure.
