A dedicated automatic target recognition and tracking optical correlator (OC) system using advanced processing technology has been developed. Rapidly cycling data-cubes with size, shape, and orientation are employed with software algorithms to isolate correlation peaks and enable tracking of targets in maritime environments with future track prediction. The method has been found superior to employing maximum average correlation height filters for which the correlation peak intensity drops off in proportion to the number of training images. The physical dimensions of the OC system may be reduced to as small as 2  in.×2  in.×3  in. (51  mm×51  mm×76  mm) by modifying and minimizing the OC components.

This paper details a compact two-dimensional optical correlator based on 128 X 128 ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulators in both the image and filter planes. A complete description of this compact correlator is given. The correlator is fully programmable and performs automatic pattern recognition functions at 500 frames per second. Key design parameters and results of performance analysis are presented.

Implementation of a liquid crystal television (LCTV) for a binary phase only converging beam Vander Lugt correlator system is described. The peculiar pixel array structure of the LCTV characterized by diffraction, scaling, and sampling is presented in a generalized form that can be easily adapted to any pixelated spatial light modulator. It is concluded that twisted nematic LCTV has a potential for becoming an effective and inexpensive spatial light modulator. The twisted nematic LCTV is capable of providing both continuous amplitude and phase modulation and can be used for a variety of real-time optical pattern recognition applications.

Using liquid-crystal TVs in Vander Lugt optical correlators

We investigate the possibility of using a real-axis spatial light modulator (SLM) to realize complex-amplitude modulation with full coverage over the unit circle. The real-axis SLM produces a pixelated bipolar-amplitude wavefront. Each pixel is basically a spatial pulse width with the signal information being carried by the pulse's amplitude. Data streams generated in this manner have real and imaginary components due to the relative even and odd symmetry of the pulse amplitude modulation. When the pulse rate is twice the minimum Nyquist rate for band-limited amplitude modulation, it is possible to resolve the signal into its quadrature phase components (real and imaginary terms). By changing the relative amplitude of these quadrature phase terms, any value within the complex plane is accessible. Since the SLM does not have any optical gain, coverage is limited to the unit circle in the complex plane.

Sampling technique for achieving full unit-circle coverage using a real-axis spatial light modulator

In this paper, a fingerprint recognition algorithm is suggested. The algorithm is developed based on the wavelet transform, and the dominant local orientation which is derived from the coherence and the gradient of Gaussian. By using the wavelet transform, the algorithm does not require conventional preprocessing procedures such as smoothing, binarization, thinning and restoration. Computer simulation results show that when the rate of Type II error-incorrect recognition of two different fingerprints as identical fingerprints-is held at 0.0%, the rate of Type I error-Incorrect recognition of two identical fingerprints as different ones-turns out as 2.5% in real time.

Miniature optical correlators offer many advantages to the image processing and patternrecognition community, including portability, modularity, and possible field deployability. Indeed,computercontrolled miniature correlators that use pixelated input and filter transducers such as magneto-optic spatial light modulators (MOSLMs) or liquid crystal displays (LCDs) can be designed and built as powerful plug-in modules for larger hybrid recognition systems, or they can stand aloneas powerful, special-purpose portable correlators for specific image processing and recognitionapplications.This paper presents a few important design considerations such as filter design, minimizationof the overall correlator length, and the effect of aberrations on system performance. Two workingprototype miniature binary phase-only filter (BPOF) correlators that use MOSLMs at the input andfilter planes are described -- a 5-lens minimum-length system (28 cm) and a 3-lens system that is longer (52 cm), easier to align, and superior in performance.
