The simulation and experimental study of a fuzzy logic controlled, three-phase shunt active power filter to improve power quality by compensating harmonics and reactive power required by a nonlinear load is presented. The advantage of fuzzy control is that it is based on a linguistic description and does not require a mathematical model of the system. The fuzzy control scheme is realised on an inexpensive dedicated micro-controller (INTEL 8031) based system. The compensation process is based on sensing line currents only, an approach different from conventional methods, which require harmonics or reactive volt-ampere requirement of the load. The performance of the fuzzy logic controller is compared with a conventional PI controller. The dynamic behavior of the fuzzy controller is found to be better than the conventional PI controller. PWM pattern generation is based on carrierless hysteresis based current control to obtain the switching signals. Various simulation and experimental results are presented under steady state and transient conditions.

Fuzzy logic controlled shunt active power filter for power quality improvement

This paper reports the development of a laboratory prototype of a fully digital DSP-controlled 12-kVA unified power quality conditioner (UPQC), capable of compensating for both the supply voltage and the load current imperfections. A fully digital controller based on the TMS320F2812 DSP platform is implemented for the reference generation as well as control purposes. The delay problem in the digital controller is overcome by application of a fast DSP, a compact control technique and proper flow of control steps in the DSP software. A phase-locked loop-less software grid synchronization method has been implemented for the effective operation of the UPQC under conditions of grid frequency variation. A sequence-based compensation strategy has been developed to compensate for balanced and unbalanced sags while accommodating the fact that the voltage injection capability of the UPQC is limited. The prototype UPQC power circuit, control features, and control algorithm along with experimental results are presented in this paper.

A 12-kVA DSP-Controlled Laboratory Prototype UPQC Capable of Mitigating Unbalance in Source Voltage and Load Current

An apparatus and method for supplying energy to a load includes an energy recharge unit, an energy storage unit, an energy converter connected to the energy recharge unit, the energy converter being capable of transferring energy at a power level from the energy recharge unit to an output node, the power level being determined by a power transfer controller, and a bi-directional energy converter connected to the energy storage unit and to the output node. The bi-directional energy converter is capable of converting energy of varying voltages from the energy storage unit to energy of varying current levels to supplement the transferred energy with energy from the energy storage unit so as to maintain a constant voltage on the output node. The bi-directional energy converter is capable of converting the transferred energy to provide charging energy to the energy storage unit when the transferred energy exceeds a demand level of the load while maintaining the constant voltage at the output node.

Modular System for Unattended Energy Generation and Storage

A new control scheme based on the Kalman filter and the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is proposed to improve the performance of power quality conditioning devices. Grid perturbations such as load variations, frequency deviation, voltage distortion, line impedance, unbalance, and measurement noise are taken into account. A new model of the plant is developed that allows the use of the LQR controller with a better performance. This new controller structure is feasible thanks to an algorithm based on the Kalman filter (KF), which estimates the state space variables at the point of common coupling, used in the proposed control system. This algorithm is also responsible for generating the references for the controller. The proposed control system was implemented using a digital signal controller. Extensive tests and experimental results are presented in order to verify the performance of the proposal.

An electronics module docking system includes docking member removably coupled to a photovoltaic module. The docking system includes a first connector port electrically coupled to one or more photovoltaic cells of the photovoltaic module. The photovoltaic module is selectively coupleable to the docking member. The docking system includes a housing to enclose an electronics module. The housing may include second connector port that is selectively engageable to the power electronics module. The power electronics module and the photovoltaic cells are electrically coupled to one another upon selective engagement of the connector ports. The inverter housing is receivable by and removably coupleable to the docking member allowing the inverter housing to be removably coupleable to the photovoltaic module.
