Homoatomic triple bonds between main-group elements have been restricted to alkynes, dinitrogen, and a handful of reactive compounds featuring trans-bent heavier elements of groups 13 and 14. Previous attempts to prepare a compound with a boron-boron triple bond that is stable at ambient temperature have been unsuccessful, despite numerous computational studies predicting their viability. We found that reduction of a bis(N-heterocyclic carbene)-stabilized tetrabromodiborane with either two or four equivalents of sodium naphthalenide, a one-electron reducing agent, yields isolable diborene and diboryne compounds. Crystallographic and spectroscopic characterization confirm that the latter is a halide-free linear system containing a boron-boron triple bond.

Ambient-temperature isolation of a compound with a boron-boron triple bond.

By the end of the last century there were already the first indications of the possible existence of Al1 halides. However, it was only through the pioneering works of W. Klemm, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday on January 6, 1996, that detailed spectroscopic investigations became possible. Since the end of the 1970s the reactivity of AlX and GaX species in solid noble gases has been confirmed by numerous examples. In recent years formally monovalent Al and Ga species have been successfully synthesized on a preparative scale. In addition to the first halides, organometallic compounds with metal–metal bonds have been isolated and investigated with regard to their chemical properties. The fundamental importance of such species has been documented in this journal among others in the form of two highlight articles in which experimental and theoretical aspects have been examined with examples, and parallels and differences with respect to boron chemistry have been illustrated. This review is intended to give an account of the chronological development of this research area over the last few years, but an attempt is also made to categorize the experimental results achieved not only with respect to structure, thermodynamics, and reactivity, but also with the aid of quantum chemical calculations and by comparative considerations.

Publisher Summary This chapter explores that the influence of boron chemistry on various areas of research in inorganic, organic, and theoretical chemistry is well documented. In fact, many models currently employed to describe chemical bonding in general can be traced to attempts to understand bonding in boranes. The confirmation of many theoretical predictions in boron chemistry relies on direct and indirect structural information provided by various physical methods that fortunately became available almost at the same rate as that with which the interest in boron compounds was growing. It discusses that developments in boron chemistry have been greatly accelerated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). 11 B NMR has been at the centre of interest from the beginning accompanied by routine 1 H NMR measurements: and occasional 14 N, 19 F and 31 P NMR work. The availability of “multinuclear” facilities for PFT NMR spectrometers stimulates the measurement of the NMR spectra of other nuclei, like 29 Si, l19 Sn or other metals, to obtain additional information. The chapter not only summarizes the experimental facts required for obtaining the maximum information from NMR studies on boron compounds but also attempts to incorporate new NMR parameters into the known data set.

Bei der Gasphasenthermolyse der Aminoborane RB(Cl)-N(SiMe3)R' (la–j) bei 500–600°C erhalt man neben Me3SiCl entweder die Borazine (RBNR')3 (3a–f) oder die Diazadiboretidine (RBNR')2 (2g–h) oder das Borimid C6F5–B = N–tBu (4i) oder - im Falle R' = Mesityl – das bicyclische Produkt eines intramolekularen Ringschlusses 5. 4i dimerisiert bei Raumtemperatur ohne Losungsmittel schnell, in Losung weniger rasch zu seinem Cyclodimeren 2i. Dieses kristallisiert in der Raumgruppe C2/c. 2i erfahrt mit Ketonen im Verhaltnis 1:1 eine enolytische Ring-offnung (6i,6i). Die CO-Bindung ungesattigter Aldehyde schiebt sich in den Vierring von 2i unter Sechsringbildung (7i, 7i) ein. Mit PhHC = N(O)Me setzt sich 2i unter Abspaltung von PhHC = NtBu zum Oxadiazadiborolidin 9i um. IR- und NMR-spektroskopische Befunde sprechen sowohl fur eine BN-Bindungsordnung groser als zwei als auch fur BC-π-Wechselwirkungen in der Titelverbindung 4i. Mit Ph2C = O reagiert 4i analog zur Wittig-Reaktion zu (C6F5BO)3 und Ph2C = NtBu und dieses geht mit 4i quantitativ eine [2 + 2]-Cycloaddition zu 10i ein. Mit Cyclopentadien setzt sich 4i als Dienophil im Sinne einer Diels-Alder-Reaktion zu 11i um.

Gas-phase thermolysis of the aminoboranes RB(CI)-N(SiMe3)R' (la–j) at 500–600°C gives Me3SiCl and either the borazines (RBNR')3 (3a–f) or the diazadiboretidines (RBNR')2 (2g–h) or the boron imide C6F5 – B = N – tBu (4i) or – in the case of R' = mesityl – the bicyclic product of an intramolecular ring closure, 5. At room temperature, the pure imide 4i quickly dimerizes to 2i; this process is retarded in solution. 2i crystallizes in the space group C2/c. Ring opening to 6i, 6i is achieved by the 1:1-reaction of 2i with the enolic tautomer of ketones. The CO bond of unsaturated aldehydes can be inserted into the ring skeleton of 2i to form 7i, 7i′. The oxadiazadiborolidine 9i and PhHC=NtBu are formed by the reaction of 2i with PhHC = N(O)Me. IR and NMR data indicate a BN bond order greater than two and BC-π bond interactions in 4i. A Wittig-type reaction is observed with 4i and Ph2C = O, giving (C6F5BO)3 and Ph2C = NtBu. 4i quantitatively adds to Ph2C = NtBu, forming a [2 + 2]-cycloadduct l0i. 4i also reacts as a dienophile in a Diels-Alder reaction with cyclopentadiene yielding 11i.
