Steroids are used to illustrate some of the significant advances that have been made in recent years in understanding the biological origin and geological fate of the organic compounds in sediments. The precursor sterols are transformed, initially by microbial activity and later by physicochemical constraints, into thermodynamically more stable saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons in mature sediments and petroleums. The steps in this transformation result in a complex web linking biogenesis, diagenesis, and catagenesis. Indeed, the complexity and variety of biological lipids such as the steroids are evidently matched in the corresponding geolipids. The extent of preservation of the biochemical imprint in the structures and stereochemistry of these geolipids, even over hundreds of millions of years, is startling, as is the systematic and sequential nature of the geochemical changes they evidently undergo. This new understanding of molecular organic geochemistry has applications in petroleum geochemistry, where biological marker compounds are valuable in the assessment of sediment maturity and in correlation work.

Physiological and biochemical changes during the molt cycle in decapod crustaceans: an overview

The sterol composition of marine invertebrates, crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms, coelenterates, and sponges has been re-examined by using improved analytical techniques. As a result, the sterol composition of marine invertebrates has been shown to be more complex mixtures including many new types of sterols with unusual steroid nuclei or with non-conventional side chains. Some crustaceans and molluscs are of importance as seafood and aquaculture species. Crustaceans and some molluscs require dietary sources of sterol for growth and survival because of the absence of de novo sterol-synthesizing ability. The present paper gives a review of the requirement and nutritive value of sterols, biosynthesis and metabolism of sterols, and composition and structure of sterols in marine invertebrates.

Sterols in marine invertebrates

1. The sterol composition of twenty-two species of the coelenterates (two classes, three subclasses, and eight orders) was investigated.

2. The elucidation of sterol components was performed by gas liquid chromatography, silver nitrate-impregnated silicic acid column chromatography, and mass, infrared absorption, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometries.

3. The class Scyphozoa contained large portions of C27-sterols such as cholesterol and 22-dehydrocholesterol.

4. The class Anthozoa, except for a few species, was rich in either 24-methylenecholesterol or 24-methylcholesterol. In addition, most soft corals contained relatively large amounts of gorgosterol or 23-demethylgorgosterol. 23,24-Dimethylcholesta-5,22-dien-3β-ol was widely distributed in alcyonarians.

Sterols of coelenterates

1. 1. Sterols have been isolated from the clam, Tapes philippinarum. 2. From the sterol mixture of the clam, the C26-sterol was isolated by column chromatography on a silver nitrate-impregnated silicic acid with hexane-benzene. The chemical structure of this sterol was then estimated by i.r. absorption spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. 2. 3. On the basis of the above data, the C26-sterol isolated from the clam was identified as 22-trans-24- norcholesta-5,22-diene-3β-ol .

After the injection of sodium acetate-1-14C into some prawns, Penaeus japonicus, the de novo lipid synthesis and the distribution of radioactive lipids in tissues such as the muscle, integument, eyestalk, hepatopancreas, and remains were investigated in association with the molting stages. The incorporation of acetate-14C into the lipids was high at stage C1-C2 and low at stages D1' and D1''-D2'''. Throughout the molting cycle, nearly half of the radioactive lipid was distributed in the remains. In the muscle, eyestalk, integument, and remains, radioactive lipids were present mainly as polar lipids in every stage. In the case of the hepatopancreas, rather large amounts of neutral lipids were present besides the polar lipids, and the ratio of polar to neutral lipids reached a minimum at stage D1'.

1. 1. The present study deals with the sterol components of the triton, Charonia tritonis (phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, order Mesogastropoda). 2. 2. The elucidation of sterol components was performed by gas-liquid chromatography (GC), argentation column chromatography and GC-mass spectrometry. 3. 3. The sterols of triton were mainly composed of cholesterol (25.9%), 24-methylcholesterol (16.7%) and 24-methylcholest-7-enol (15.5%). Also, this snail contained the significant amounts of Δ 7 - sterols such as cholest-7-enol (5.4%), 24-methylcholest-7,22-dienol (6.7%) and acansterol (4.9%) besides 24-methylcholest-7-enol (15.5%). 4. 4. Since the triton is a natural enemy of the starfish, Acanthaster planci, containing Δ 7 - sterols as principal sterols, the Δ 7 - sterols of this snail were assumed to be derived probably from the starfish.
