Divorced women, who had been married for an average of 22 years, wrote narrative descriptions of their best possible future selves before the divorce (retrospectively) and after the divorce, rated the salience of these narratives, and completed measures of SWB and ED. Independent raters coded the narratives for amount of elaboration (i.e., vivid detail). The salience of the lost possible self was negatively related to SWB while the salience of the current possible self was positively related to SWB. Elaboration of the found possible self was associated with concurrent ED as well as ED two years later. Lost self elaboration interacted with time since divorce to predict ED, controlling for age and Time 1 ED. Results are interpreted as indicating that, while happiness may require us to avoid thinking about what might have been, maturity might require an awareness of the losses and sacrifices of adulthood.

To what degree is the course of human life prefigured by the childhood and adolescent years? Clausen draws on 60 years of research from this long-term inquiry into human lives to answer this question. He demonstrates that \"adolescent planful competence\", a combination of self-confidence, dependability and an investment in intellectual matters has a significant and continuing influence on many aspects of our adult lives, even into old age. Over 300 youngsters born in the 1920s in California's Bay area were studied intensively through their school years and periodically followed up since then. Although the many developments in their lives could not have been forseen, classifications made from data available for their adolescent years enabled Clausen and his colleagues to make predictions of the paths their lives would take. Clausen shows how study members who, during their teenage years, displayed a high degree of planful competence, made more realistic choices early in life and were selected for more promising opportunities as adults than others. Other aspects of personality, appearance and social background also had long-term consequences, but adolescent planful competence proved far more potent than any other measure in indicating how lives would change, and who would experience essential stable, as opposed to crisis-ridden, lives.

Living in the Truth

In this article I report on a research project conducted in Perth, Western Australia, which investigated how contemporary women experience physiological and psychosocial midlife transitions. Qualitative in-depth interviews explored the challenges confronting women during this period. In doing so, continuities and divergences that exist between existing literature on midlife transitions and women's own perspectives are highlighted. Based on key findings, I suggest that while most women manage the “classic” transitions of menopause and the “empty nest” relatively well, the impact of divorce and the aging and death of parents present more serious long-term challenges to women.

Explanations for the obstacles to progress toward equality for women fall into two broad categories: (1) constraints on women are enforced by male power; (2) women are limited by their own outlook. This male power/female psychology polarity is a version of the debate over structure and agency. Reference to women's condition can illuminate this debate, which has largely been conducted in terms of ‘objective’ evidence. Evidence on subjective experience of constraint and action is provided by literature; creative writers have revealingly explored the interplay between structure and agency. A social enactment approach explores how social actors are both constrained by and can alter social structure. The enactment approach asks how constraints binding women are reinforced by structures reproduced through women's compliance and explores the scope for change, the ways in which new understanding can empower women.
