Research into local knowledge is very important in providing a database of medicinal plants and as a basis for further research. The genus Curcuma (Zingiberaceae) has been used as medicines and other purposes, so it has a high economic value.  The aim of this study was to record the use of the species of the genus Curcuma as traditional herbal medicines in Indonesia. The study was a part of a project called RISTOJA (Research on Medicinal Plants and Traditional Herbal Medicines), which collected data from 415 ethnic groups in Indonesia from 2012 to 2017. A purposive sampling method was used to select 2,354 respondents (traditional healers) for interviews, 1,042 of whom used Curcuma as herbal medicines. It was found that eight species of the genus were used to treat 73 different ailments. Curcuma longa was found to have the highest relative frequency of citation (0.274) and use value (0.563), and members of the genus Curcuma were found to be extensively used to treat a wide variety of ailments in Indonesia.

Ethnopharmacological surveys require novel approaches to obtain successful hits in drug discovery. The objectives of the present study were to document the traditional uses of medicinal plants from the Deserts of Sindh and to authenticate the documented traditional uses. The traditional uses were documented from informants using semi-structured questionnaires and open-ended interviews. The data were analyzed using relative frequency of citation (RFC), Use value (UV), Informant consensus factor (ICF), Fidelity level (FL) and Relative Importance (RI), and their uses were validated through Metanalyses (MAs) and Systemic reviews (SRs). Overall, 74 plant species were reported from 207 informants and their traditional uses were validated from 299 published ethnobotanical studies. Aloe vera and Ricinus communis were more frequently cited in published literature. Blepharis ciliaris and Echinops echinatus either due to lack of pharmacological or phytochemical studies. The leaves were the most frequently used (36 reports), and decoctions (27 reports)) followed by powder (26) were predominantly reported. The UV varied from 0.49 (Cynodon dactylon) to 0.2 (Tribulus terrestris); the RFC from 0.38 (Calotropis procera) to (Aerva javanica); and the RI from 50.74 (Acacia nilotica) to 5.61 (Salvia santolinifolia). The maximum FL was found for 14 species, and the ICF varied from 0.61 (Digestive disorders) to 0.16 (Nervous disorders). The deserts (Sindh-Pakistan) provides many important plant species with most authenticated traditional uses. The plant species having most authenticated uses, highest correlated ethnobotanical index values, and lacking pharmacological or phytochemical studies, may yield desired results in limited time with most cost-effective resources.

Medicinal plant diversity used for livelihood of public health in deserts and arid regions of Sindh-Pakistan

This paper presents the first comprehensive report on traditional uses of medicinal shrubs of Rawalakot city, district Poonch, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. Ethobotanical data obtained from 120 informants were analyzed by relative frequency citation, use value, family use value, informant consensus factor, fidelity level and Jaccard index. In total, 41 shrubs belonging to 24 families and 34 genera were documented. Rosaceae was reported the most dominant family in the area (six species) and Berberidaceae showed maximum family use value (0.68). Leaves (35%) and fruits (33%) were the most commonly used plant parts and most of the medicines were prepared in the form of decoction. The high informant consensus factor value (0.94) was recorded for diabetic disease category. Medicinal plants with high fidelity level values (100% each) were Berberis lycium, Cydonia oblanga, Ricinus communis, Ziziphus jujuba and Nerium oleander. Berberis lycium was the most significant shrub in the area with highest use value (0.68). Relative frequency citation value was maximum for Rubus ellipticus (0.30), Nerium oleander and Indigofera heterantha (0.10 each). Percentage of similar plant uses ranged from 21.05 to 0.62% and dissimilarity percentage ranged from 32.50 to 0.66%. Out of the 41 shrub species, six were reported with new therapeutic uses and may represent new bioresources. These were Debregeasia salicifolia (diabetes), Desmodium elegans (anti-cancerous), Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (jaundice), Hypericum oblongifolium (arthritis), Sarcococca saligna (tuberculosis), Rubus niveus (chronic cough) and Otostegia limbata (renal disorders). We suggest that species reported with high use value should be involved in cultivation and agricultural practices for their sustainable use and those reported with new therapeutic uses should be employed in further biotechnological, pharmacological and clinical studies in order to validate their traditional uses.

Allium is one of the largest genera of monocotyledons with 900 species distributed all over the world. It is also one of the most important genera containing several medicinal and edible plants. Various species of Allium are known since ancient times and are used as spices, vegetables and, as medical plants. Allium cepa (common onion) and Allium sativum (common garlic) are the two main species that have widely been used for therapeutic properties. Studies have revealed many members of the genus Allium as rich source of secondary metabolites which contributes to its biological activities. A wide variety of phytochemicals including the flavonoids, alkaloids, sulfides, saponins, polysaccharides, polyphenols, and several compounds of the sulfur containing amino acids cysteine have been identified as main constituents of these plants. The antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties of many Allium species have been authenticated worldwide. The antifungal and antimicrobial activities of bulbs and aerial parts of species have been reported. In addition, species from this genus have a wide array of biological activities like antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-diabetic potentials as well as beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and immune systems. The present article reviews recent advances in ethno-medicinal uses and active phytochemicals found in the various species of the genus Allium.

Acanthaceae is a large family of dicotyledonous flowering plants including about 4300 species and 346 genera all over the world. Most are tropical shrubs, herbs and twining vines while some are epiphytes. There is increasing interest about the indigenous medicinal plants for correct identification, taxonomy and medicinal properties. Chemically it contained some important secondary metabolites such as glycosides, flavonoids, alkaloids, triterpenoids, fatty acid methyl esters and fatty acids. These compounds play an important role in many biological reactions and work against many lethal diseases. Leaves, roots and other parts are used as anti-pyrietic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, antiseptic and antidiabetic. Some other important plants belong to this family are used to treat skin diseases, cough, eye infections, wounds, pneumonia, anti-diarrhea, edema etc. There are only a few examples that underline importance of family Acanthaceae. This medical importance attracted the researchers to explore the various aspects of this family. The medicinal role and significance of the family can hardly be overemphasized. The present review highlights some key features of some important genus of this important plant family and also describes its various conventional and new novel uses in our daily life. By keeping these points the present study will be useful for further research and clinical trials in future study of some new important plant species belong to this important family.
