TL;DR: DNA sequence analysis of thesoxR genes from the soxRS-constitutive strains isolated originally revealed that three alleles encode amino acid substitutions or a chain termination clustered near the C-terminus of SoxR, which appears to maintain the protein in the inactive state.

TL;DR: It is shown that the soxRS-regulated enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase is an important element of the defense against macrophages, which can counteract most of the cytotoxic effects of NO.
