OM-companion to production and operations management : total quality and responsiveness

Total productive maintenance (TPM), total maintenance assurance, preventive maintenance, reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), and many other innovative approaches to maintenance problems all aim at enhancing the effectiveness of machines to ultimately improve productivity. Each of these concepts demands a unique decision support system for maintenance resources planning, and implementing each of them requires a radical restructuring of work. Introducing computer-aided maintenance resources planning (CAMRP) system is a major challenge because the maintenance operations environment is usually traditional and unfavorable to change. This paper presents a computer-aided planning system for a maintenance business unit that serves a number of manufacturing facilities, each consisting of a set of high-precision CNC machining centers. The workforce in the maintenance business unit is responsible for preventive as well as corrective maintenance activities of all CNC machines within the different manufacturing sites. The newly developed decision support tool embodies a set of structured heuristics methods for the coordination of tasks among maintenance crews which will help conduct different maintenance activities of manufacturing units in a more synchronized way. Through what-if-analyses, the tool generates well-founded decisions for capacity planning are; synchronizes maintenance activities to predict maintenance start and expected finishing times, thereby leads to lower costs.

Development of computer-aided maintenance resources planning (CAMRP) : A case of multiple CNC machining centers

As Editor, when I receive a reliability textbook, I immediately check to see if the authors are statisticians or reliability engineers. The former produce books that are comprehensive for statistical methods but generally somewhat lacking in describing actual applications; the latter produce books with excellent applications and generally poor explanations of the statistical methods. This book, appearing here in its second edition (2E), falls into the latter group. These authors are actually civil engineers. The reviewer (Bryson 1999) for the  rst edition (1E), which was published in 1997, captured my thoughts by noting that “the examples are perhaps the best feature of the book,” and that “the lack of mathematical rigor degenerates frequently into statements that are misleading or outright wrong” (p. 172). Bryson gave many examples, including “When the sum of the residuals does not equal zero, it re ects a bias in the model,” a statement that still appears on p. 417 in the 2E. In the 2E, the authors follow this statement with a long paragraph explaining what they meant by that statement. I do not have a copy of the 1E to make a comparison. The 2E is 20% larger than the 1E. It has 16 chapters, compared with 9 chapters in the 1E. This increase is due mainly from splitting up the chapters of the 1E. The end result is de nitely a book that is more consistent with a good text in engineering statistics. The only chapter that comprises entirely new material is the chapter on analysis of variance, a rather basic topic in statistics for engineers and scientists. This is not a good book to use as a text or reference for scientists or engineers. It may be adequate for reliability engineers. Bryson (1999) noted that “the best chapter is Chapter 8 on reliability and risk analysis” (p. 173). He also noted that “the main topic that I found missing was an appreciation for the role of standard computer programs” (ibid.). Amazingly, there remains absolutely no mention of statistics software. Readers are treated to a decent dose of algebra and are expected to grind out much of the computation for themselves.
