Demo: Illinois vehicular project, live data sampling and energy-efficient node discovery
Riccardo Crepaldi,Mehedi Bakht,Tarek Abdelzaher,Robin Kravets +3 more
- 28 Jun 2011
TL;DR: The Illinois Vehicular Testbed was designed and deployed, instrumented a number of cars with wireless radios for carto-car and car-to-server communication, Bluetooth, GPS receivers and OBD-II receiver to collect on-board diagnostics from the car, and answered questions about energy efficiency and capacity.

Social Network Signal Processing for Cyber-Physical Systems
Tarek Abdelzaher,Shiguang Wang,Prasanna Giridhar,Tanvir Al Amin,P. Seetharamu,Heather Roy,Hongwei Wang,Lance M. Kaplan,Elizabeth K. Bowman,Jemin George +9 more
- 01 Jan 2017
TL;DR: It is shown that, as a sensing modality, social sensing is not unlike acoustic, vibration, or magnetic sensing, and a mathematical analogy is presented between social networks and physical media that allows adaptation of signal processing algorithms derived for the latter to solve novel challenges observed in the former.

Free-form text summarization in social sensing
Hongzhao Huang,Sam Anzaroot,Heng Ji,Hieu Le,Dong Wang,Tarek Abdelzaher +5 more
- 16 Apr 2012
TL;DR: A system which can automatically summarize real-time textual data common to social sensing applications, focusing on text messages that describe events in the environment is demonstrated.

ImprovingEnergyConservationUsingBulkTransmissionover High-PowerRadiosinSensorNetworks ∗
Cigdem Sengul,Mehedi Bakht,Albert F. Harris,Tarek Abdelzaher,Robin Kravets +4 more
- 01 Jan 2008
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the potential for energy savings from adding a high-power, high-bandwidth radio to current sensor platforms, and present a bulk data transmission protocol for dual radio systems.
1
Applying traditional signal processing techniques to social media exploitation for situational understanding
Tarek Abdelzaher,Heather Roy,Shiguang Wang,Prasanna Giridhar,Md. Tanvir Al Amin,Elizabeth K. Bowman,Michael A. Kolodny +6 more
TL;DR: This paper views social networks as noisy sensors that report events in the physical world, and describes signal processing techniques that mitigate such distortion, resulting in meaningful approximations of actual ground truth, given noisy reported observations.
