User involvement is a widely accepted principle in development of usable systems. However, it is a vague concept covering many approaches. This study first clarifies the nature of user involvement and its expected benefits, and secondly reviews three streams of research, to evaluate the benefits and problems of varied user involvement approaches in practice. The particular focus of this study is on the early activities in the development process. An analysis of the literature suggests that user involvement has generally positive effects, especially on user satisfaction, and some evidence exists to suggest that taking users as a primary information source is an effective means of requirements capture. However, the role of users must be carefully considered and more cost-efficient practices are needed for gathering users' implicit needs and requirements in real product development contexts.

User involvement: A review of the benefits and challenges

A method for structuring the process of participatory document evaluation by a plurality of reviewers utilizing a feed-forward synchronization schema defined as a workflow graph (52) construct. The workflow graph construct allows one to define efficient document evaluation strategies that take advantage of the inherent parallelism within a business process, and take into account the data dependencies exhibited by the business process. Independent aspects of each document are evaluated in parallel, and a stage evaluation is started when all required data (including data provided by other reviewers) is available. The workflow graph construct assembles together a set of workflow objects (review (46), roles (48), stages (50), document (44)), and associates a set of functional properties to each of them. The topology of the workflow graph describes the synchronization schema, while the functional properties provide additional flexibility and further refine the evaluation strategy. A method for managing the process of participatory document evaluation by a plurality of reviewers utilizing a programmed computer system. Documents to be reviewed are prepared by a set of preparers, and are stored into a database (38). Reviewers participate in the review process by evaluating aspects of the document within their area of expertise. Depending on the information in each individual document, a set of reviewers is notified that the document is ready for their review. Each reviewer is notified at the time appropriate for his/her role via electronic mail by a workflow manager (30).

A user interface (UI) in the form of a single navigable window enables a user to navigate to and between multiple different functionalities that are provided by a single application program. Novel use is made of navigation model that manages the user's navigation activites to and between the different functionalities. Navigation instrumentalities enable the user to navigate among the different functionalities and include links to each of the different functionalities as well as browser-like navigation buttons. Context-sensitive command sets can also be provided along with the single navigable window. The context sensitive command sets include commands that automatically change as the user's computing context changes, e.g. as the user moves from functionality to functionality. The single application can be defined as a software platform that is extensible to receive and incorporate different functionalities. The functionalities can be provided as software modules that can be sent over a network such as the Internet. The extensible software platform provides a basis to offer a subscriber or fee-based service where different subscribers can, for a fee, access different functionalities via a network such as the Internet.

Single window navigation methods and systems

An Object-Action Manager shields an applications developer from multiple display technologies and development tools and assists the developer in applications user interface creation. The manager includes a parser, an object-list builder, dialog-box builder, a library of access functions and a display handler. The object-list builder and dialog-box builder are used to build user interface screen definitions according to predetermined parameters. The parser reads a developer-defined description file and builds data structures. The object-list builder and dialog-box builder use the data structures to customize the user interface screens for the developer. The library contains functions used during operation of the user interface. The display handler manages interaction between the end-user and the developed application.

Object-action user interface management system

Qualitative user-centered design processes such as contextual inquiry can generate huge amounts of data to be organized, analyzed, and represented. When you add the goal of spreading the resultant understanding to the far reaches of a large, multi-site organization, many practical barriers emerge.In this paper we describe experience creating and communicating representations of contextually derived user data in a large, multi-site product development organization. We describe how we involved a distributed team in data collection and analysis and how we made the data representations portable. We then describe how we have engaged over 200 people from five sites in thinking through the user data and its implications on product design.

If the user running the System Administration Manager program is one who has activities associated with his user id, a menu screen for proceeding with those activities (and only those activities) is presented to the user. A menu of operations is also used for assisting the super user in establishing graded restricted access to the System Administration Manager program for the non super users selected to have it. Various security safeguards are incorporated into the System Administration Manager to prevent a user from surreptitiously promoting himself to super user.
