An air-fuel ratio control system for an internal combustion engine includes a LAF sensor and an O2 sensor arranged in an exhaust pipe at respective locations upstream and downstream of a catalytic converter. A desired air-fuel ratio coefficient used in calculating an amount of fuel supplied to the engine is calculated based on operating conditions of the engine, and corrected based on output from the O2 sensor. The air-fuel ratio of a mixture supplied to the engine is feedback-controlled to a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio based on the corrected desired air-fuel ratio coefficient. When the output from the O2 sensor falls within a predetermined range, the desired air-fuel ratio coefficient is not corrected, but held at an immediately preceding value thereof.

In an exhaust gas purification device for an internal combustion engine, a NOX occluding and reducing catalyst is disposed in the exhaust gas passage of an engine. The NOX occluding and reducing catalyst absorbs NOX in the exhaust gas when the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas is at a lean air-fuel ratio and releases and reduces NOX when the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas is at a rich air-fuel ratio. When the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the catalyst is changed from a rich air-fuel ratio to a lean air-fuel ratio, the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing out from the catalyst stays at a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio before it changes to a lean air-fuel ratio. The length of the period in which the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing out from the catalyst stays at a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio corresponds to the magnitude of the ability of the NOX occluding and reducing catalyst as a reducing catalyst. Thus, by measuring the length of the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio period of the exhaust gas flowing out from the NOX occluding and reducing catalyst, the ability of the NOX occluding and reducing catalyst as a reducing catalyst can be precisely evaluated.

A method is disclosed for controlling operation of an engine coupled to an exhaust treatment catalyst. Under predetermined conditions, the method operates an engine with a first group of cylinders combusting a lean air/fuel mixture and a second group of cylinders pumping air only (i.e., without fuel injection). In addition, the engine control method also provides the following features in combination with the above-described split air/lean mode: idle speed control, sensor diagnostics, air/fuel ratio control, adaptive learning, fuel vapor purging, catalyst temperature estimation, default operation, and exhaust gas and emission control device temperature control. In addition, the engine control method also changes to combusting in all cylinders under preselected operating conditions such as fuel vapor purging, manifold vacuum control, and purging of stored oxidants in an emission control device.

A catalyst deterioration-determining system determines deterioration of a catalyst arranged in the exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine. An ECU is responsive to an output from an O2 sensor arranged upstream of the catalyst or outputs from O2 sensors arranged upstream and downstream of the catalyst for controlling the air-fuel ratio of a mixture supplied to the engine by means of an air-fuel ratio correction value (first air-fuel ratio control). When the engine is in a predetermined operating condition, the system effects changeover from the first air-fuel ratio control to a second air-fuel ratio control which is responsive to the output from the downstream O2 sensor for controlling the air-fuel ratio of the mixture by means of the air-fuel ratio correction value. After the changeover has been effected, a time period is measured which elapses from the time the second air-fuel ratio control causes a change in the air-fuel ratio correction value from a richer side to a leaner side or vice versa with respect to a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio to the time the output from the downstream O2 sensor is inverted from the richer side to the leaner side or vice versa with respect to the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. It is determined that the catalyst is deteriorated, when the measured time period is shorter than the predetermined time period.
