The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument and investigation as a part of the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is designed to study convection-zone dynamics and the solar dynamo, the origin and evolution of sunspots, active regions, and complexes of activity, the sources and drivers of solar magnetic activity and disturbances, links between the internal processes and dynamics of the corona and heliosphere, and precursors of solar disturbances for space-weather forecasts. A brief overview of the instrument, investigation objectives, and standard data products is presented.

Many problems in the experimental estimation of parameters for models can be solved through use of the likelihood ratio test. Applications of the likelihood ratio, with particular attention to photon counting experiments, are discussed. The procedures presented solve a greater range of problems than those currently in use, yet are no more difficult to apply. The procedures are proved analytically, and examples from current problems in astronomy are discussed.

The Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) is a five telescope package, which has been developed for the Solar Terrestrial Relation Observatory (STEREO) mission by the Naval Research Laboratory (USA), the Lockheed Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory (USA), the Goddard Space Flight Center (USA), the University of Birmingham (UK), the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK), the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (Germany), the Centre Spatiale de Leige (Belgium), the Institut d’Optique (France) and the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (France). SECCHI comprises five telescopes, which together image the solar corona from the solar disk to beyond 1 AU. These telescopes are: an extreme ultraviolet imager (EUVI: 1–1.7 R⊙), two traditional Lyot coronagraphs (COR1: 1.5–4 R⊙ and COR2: 2.5–15 R⊙) and two new designs of heliospheric imagers (HI-1: 15–84 R⊙ and HI-2: 66–318 R⊙). All the instruments use 2048×2048 pixel CCD arrays in a backside-in mode. The EUVI backside surface has been specially processed for EUV sensitivity, while the others have an anti-reflection coating applied. A multi-tasking operating system, running on a PowerPC CPU, receives commands from the spacecraft, controls the instrument operations, acquires the images and compresses them for downlink through the main science channel (at compression factors typically up to 20×) and also through a low bandwidth channel to be used for space weather forecasting (at compression factors up to 200×). An image compression factor of about 10× enable the collection of images at the rate of about one every 2–3 minutes. Identical instruments, except for different sizes of occulters, are included on the STEREO-A and STEREO-B spacecraft.

Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI)

The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) aboard the Hinode satellite (formerly called Solar-B) consists of the Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA) and the Focal Plane Package (FPP). The OTA is a 50-cm diffraction-limited Gregorian telescope, and the FPP includes the narrowband filtergraph (NFI) and the broadband filtergraph (BFI), plus the Stokes Spectro-Polarimeter (SP). The SOT provides unprecedented high-resolution photometric and vector magnetic images of the photosphere and chromosphere with a very stable point spread function and is equipped with an image-stabilization system with performance better than 0.01 arcsec rms. Together with the other two instruments on Hinode (the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS)), the SOT is poised to address many fundamental questions about solar magnetohydrodynamics. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a product manufacturing process management method and management system, for use in a product manufacturing process in which at least one of preprocess groups and following postprocess groups is composed of a plurality of process groups, that can optimize the whole manufacturing process at any given time and fully reduce manufacturing cost even when there is a capacity difference in manufacturing facilities used in the process groups. SOLUTION: From an information terminal installed in each process group, the system collects, over a network, profit speed indication data calculated based on information on a bottleneck process in each process group of the plurality of process groups. Using the profit speed indication data on each process group, the system finds an optimum combination of the plurality of process groups that maximize the profit of the whole manufacturing process. Then over the network, the system provides the information terminal, installed in each process group, with the information on the optimum combination to manage the manufacturing process composed of the plurality of processes.

Magnetic and transport properties of a new cubic compound CeMgZn2 have been examined by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, the magnetization, the electrical resistivity, and the specific heat. CeMgZn2 is a Kondo-lattice compound with trivalent Ce ions. The magnetic susceptibility measured at 0.1 T exhibits a shoulder and a cusp at T N1 = 5.4 K and T N2 = 3.1 K, respectively. T N1 and T N2 correspond to the antiferromagnetic-transition temperatures since these temperatures decrease with increasing magnetic field. The large value of the paramagnetic Curie temperature divided by T N1 (13.5) implies that T N1 is suppressed by geometrical frustration on a face-centered cubic Ce sublattice. The geometrical frustration may also be responsible for the appearance of many magnetic phases in magnetic fields.

Low-Temperature Magnetic and Transport Properties of a New Orthorhombic Compound CePt3Sn2

We examine the effects of deconvolution of Yohkoh SXT images using a Blind Iterative Deconvolution algorithm and a modified PSF/noise suppression method. Though the results show clear enhancement of peak intensities in X-ray structures, some critical problems are found during the calculation, which makes it hard to deconvolve the SXT images with general algorithms. The difficulty comes from the undersampling of SXT images, and therefore more detailed consideration is required for the deconvolution.
