Southern Theory: The Global Dynamics of Knowledge in Social Science

The article examines the relationship between the size of the shadow economy and indicators of the investment market development. Net inflow of foreign direct investments, volume of net investments in non-financial assets, volumes of portfolio investments, and net outflow of foreign direct investment were used as parameters characterizing the development of the investment market. The dependence between the indicators was analyzed using the regression equation, Shapiro-Wilk test. Research results demonstrate that the increase in the inflow and outflow of foreign direct investments leads to an increase in the size of the shadow economy without a time lag in Ukraine, Poland, Slovenia, Romania, Croatia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and with a time lag of 1 year in Slovakia and Hungary. The largest impact on the size of the shadow economy is made by the volume of inflow and outflow of direct foreign investments, while the volume of portfolio investments has a less significant effect. Consequently, it was concluded that the processes of inflow and outflow of direct foreign investments require enhanced control by specialized state executive bodies given the scale of their potential destabilizing impact on the macroeconomic stability of the country.

Foreign direct investment and shadow economy: One-way effect or multiple-way causality?

Over the past few decades, foreign investments (FIs) have exerted a significant impact on the growth of both developed and underdeveloped countries. Although many studies have explored the FIs-growth nexus a state-of-art analysis is needed with reference to underdeveloped countries only. The article aims to analyse a selected and recent empirical literature from 2020 to 2022 relates to the FIs-growth nexus with evidence from developing and emerging economies, by providing indications on the state-of-art of research, as well as, by situating works to contribute to the analyses on this field and to be used by researchers, academics, and practitioners as a research agenda. By using a bibliometric approach based on the journal's Impact Factor index over the previous two years (IF-2021), several research topic areas with the recent empirical studies have been discovered. Therefore, FIs are driven by: (i) economic efficiency, (ii) productivity and trade, (iii) sustainable development, (iv) Chinese economic expansionism. The analysis suggests that in underdeveloped countries the foreign investment effectiveness in stimulating growth mainly depends on the institutional and business environment of the host country. Sound governance and the technological gap emerge as the crucial drivers for development of countries, on which they should spend efforts and invest resources.

Inward foreign direct investment indirectly or directly affect economic growth through various means. For instance, the direct effect might be attributed to production factors, while information and communication technology changes are linked to the indirect effect. This study aimed to examine the impact of direct and indirect inward foreign investment and information and communication technology on Indonesian economic growth. The data was collected from the annual time series from 1994 to 2019. Furthermore, an autoregressive distributed lag model was used to analyze the data and provide accurate conclusions. The results showed that short-term and long-term inward foreign direct investment and information and communication technology significantly affects Indonesian economic growth. In the long term, the direct and indirect effects of inward foreign direct investment are negative and positive, respectively. However, the long-term effect of information and communication technology on economic growth is positive.

Education system has witnessed a series of curriculum reforms in the country, however, most of these failed to produce an enlightened and inquiry-oriented curriculum. The national curriculum 2006 in general and Pakistan studies in particular seems to be an attempt towards liberating it from ideological forces and responding to the emerging global needs of twenty first century and geographical changes in the region. This case study investigated implementation of Pakistan studies curriculum for developing students’ global perspectives. The study was conducted in two higher secondary schools in which three teachers from each school participated. The study employed qualitative research methodology containing document analysis, interviews and classroom observations to gather relevant data. The study found that subject matter of Pakistan Studies of secondary and higher secondary school curriculum (class X-XII) and teachers’ pedagogies incorporated exotic cross-cultural contents and fostered students’ awareness of perspectival differences but failed to offer insights into global issues from multiple perspectives. Teachers’ pedagogies also reproduced colonial cultural perspectives informed by teachers' limited knowledge about globalization. The examination-driven teaching culture in schools and teachers’ limited knowledge of world culture and economy didn't help teachers to develop students’ global perspectives.
