In a liquid crystal display element of the present invention, the aligning capability for imparting pre-tilt angles to a liquid crystal material is imparted only to the surface of the alignment film of one of the substrates, the material layer having dielectric anisotropy includes a chiral material and a liquid crystal material with a nematic liquid crystal phase, 0.25≦d/p≦0.50 is satisfied assuming that the thickness of the material layer having the dielectric anisotropy is d and the chiral pitch length of the liquid crystal material is p, and 1000×d/p≦Δn×d is satisfied assuming that the refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystal material is Δn.

Liquid crystal display element

The present invention relates to liquid-crystalline media (LC media) with negative or positive dielectric anisotropy containing a low molecular weight component and a polymerizable component. The polymerizable component comprises self-aligning, polymerizable mesogens (polymerizable self-alignment additives) which bring about a homeotropic (vertical) alignment of the LC media on a surface or the cell walls of a liquid crystal display (LC display). The invention therefore also includes LC displays with a homeotropic alignment of the LC medium without orientation layers. The invention discloses new structures for self-orientation additives which have a specific position of the functional groups.

SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display element includes: applying a polymer composition containing (A) a polyamic acid and/or polyimide having a group expressed by formula (A-I) and (B) an organic solvent, on each conductive film of a pair of substrates having conductive films to form a coating film; forming a liquid crystal cell by disposing the pair of substrates with the coating films formed thereon, with the coating films opposing to each other via a layer of liquid crystal molecules; and irradiating the liquid crystal cell with light while a voltage is applied between the conductive films of the pair of substrates.
