In this paper, we consider imaging of moving fluids with electrical impedance tomography (EIT). In EIT, the conductivity distribution is reconstructed on the basis of electrical boundary measurements. In the case of time-varying targets—such as moving fluids in process industry—it is advantageous to formulate the reconstruction problem as a state-estimation problem, because the state-estimation approach allows incorporation of target evolution models in the reconstruction. The reconstruction algorithms consist of recursions in which the state predictions given by the evolution model are updated with the information provided by measurements. When monitoring single-phase flow, the evolution of the substance concentration can be described with the convection–diffusion model. The convection–diffusion model includes the fluid velocity field. In our previous studies, we have assumed that the velocity field is known. In this paper, we extend the approach to cases of unknown velocity fields. The velocity field is reconstructed simultaneously with the conductivity distribution by using an extended Kalman filter. The numerical results indicate that estimating the velocity field from EIT measurements is possible—at least to some extent.

In recent years the industrial application of advanced control techniques for the process industries has become more demanding, mainly due to the increasing complexity of the processes themselves as well as to enhanced requirements in terms of product quality and environmental factors. Therefore the process industries require more reliable, accurate, robust, efficient and flexible control systems for the operation of process plant. In order to fulfil the above requirements there is a continuing need for research on improved forms of control. There is also a need, for a variety of purposes including control system design, for improved process models to represent the types of plant commonly used in industry. 

Advanced technology has had a significant impact on industrial control engineering. The new trend in terms of advanced control technology is increasingly towards the use of a control approach known as an “intelligent” control strategy. Intelligent control can be described as a control approach or solution that tries to imitate important characteristics of the human way of thinking, especially in terms of decision making processes and uncertainty. It is also a term that is commonly used to describe most forms of control systems that are based on artificial neural networks or fuzzy logic. 

The first aspect of the research described in the thesis concerns the development of a mathematical model of a specific chemical process, a pH neutralization process. It was intended that this model would then provide an opportunity for the development, implementation, testing and evaluation of an advanced form of controller. It was also intended that this controller should be consistent in form with the generally accepted definition of an “intelligent” controller. The research has been based entirely around a specific pH neutralization process pilot plant installed at the University Teknologi Petronas, in Malaysia. The main feature of interest in this pilot plant is that it was built using instrumentation and actuators that are currently used in the process industries. The dynamic model of the pilot plant has been compared in detail with the results of experiments on the plant itself and the model has been assessed in terms of its suitability for the intended control system design application.

The second stage of this research concerns the implementation and testing of advanced forms of controller on the pH neutralization pilot plant. The research was also concerned with the feasibility of using a feedback/feedforward control structure for the pH neutralization process application. Thus the study has utilised this control scheme as a backbone of the overall control structure. The main advantage of this structure is that it provides two important control actions, with the feedback control scheme reacting to unmeasured disturbances and the feedforward control scheme reacting immediately to any measured disturbance and set-point changes. A non-model-based form of controller algorithm involving fuzzy logic has been developed within the context of this combined feedforward and feedback control structure. 

The fuzzy logic controller with the feedback/feedforward control approach was implemented and a wide range of tests and experiments were carried out successfully on the pilot plant with this type of controller installed. Results from this feedback/feedforward control structure are extremely encouraging and the controlled responses of the plant with the fuzzy logic controller show interesting characteristics. Results obtained from tests of these closed-loop system configurations involving the real pilot plant are broadly similar to results found using computer-based simulation. Due to limitations in terms of access to the pilot plant the investigation of the feedback/feedforward control scheme with other type of controllers such as Proportional plus Integral (PI) controller could not be implemented. However, extensive computer-based simulation work was carried out using the same control scheme with PI controller and the control performances are also encouraging.

The emphasis on implementation of advanced forms of control with a feedback/feedforward control scheme and the use of the pilot plant in these investigations are important aspects of the work and it is hoped that the favourable outcome of this research activity may contribute in some way to reducing the gap between theory and practice in the process control field.

Practical modelling and control implementation studies on a pH neutralization process pilot plant

Multi-rate state estimation applied to a pilot-scale reactive distillation process

The conventional PID control (linear) is popular control scheme that is used in almost pH control at waste water treatment process. pH model with respect to titration liquid flow rate has been known to be intrinsically difficult and nonlinear, especially when the process is conducted to non-linear range pH reference (pH 4-8), the settling time reach a long time. Therefore in this paper the nonlinear controller with self-tuning PID scheme is performed handle pH by training a neural-network based on backpropagation error signals. The pH process model is combination between CSTR (Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor) linear dynamic with H3PO4, HF, HCl, H2S flow rate and nonlinear static electro neutrality (wiener process model). The simulation result has a good and suitable performance under several tests (set-point and load change). The simulation result show the pH control system can follow the change of pH set-point and load with the average steady state error 0.00034. The settling time achieved at 50 second faster than conventional PID controller scheme.

Self-Tuning Pid Neural Network Controller to Control Nonlinear Ph Neutralization in Waste Water Treatment

Object-oriented modeling methodology is used for encapsulating different methods and attributes of data reconciliation (DR) in classes. Classes which are defined for DR, cover steady-state, dynamic, linear and nonlinear DR problems. Two main classes are Constraints and DR and defined for manipulating constraints and general DR problem. The remaining classes are derived from these two classes. A class namely DDRMethod is developed for encapsulating all common attributes and methods needed for any DDR method. Developed DR software and the method of performing dynamic DR are discussed in this paper. Two illustrative examples of Extended Kalman Filtering and artificial neural networks are used for DDR and two classes of DDRByKalman and NetDDRMethod developed by inheritance from DDRMethod class for these two methods. Performance of the proposed method is investigated by DDR of temperature measurements of a distillation column.

The pH neutralization process is a representative nonlinear process. If a change in feed or buffer streams is introduced, the characteristics of the titration curve are altered and the way of change in titration curve is highly nonlinear. Moreover, if the changes are introduced in the middle of operation, then the nature of the process becomes nonlinear and time-varying. This is the one of the reason why conventional PID controller may fail. Even though the use of buffer solution may alleviate the nonlinearity, the improvement may be limited. A better way to tackle this type of process is to use nonlinear model-based control techniques with online parameter estimation. However, in most cases, the measurements of the process are not adequate enough so that the full state feedback control techniques can be utilized. If the states and crucial parameters are estimated online simultaneously, the effectiveness of the nonlinear state feedback control can be greatly enhanced. Thus, in this study, the capability of simultaneous estimation of states and parameters using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) are experimentally investigated for a pH neutralization process. The process is modelled using reaction invariants and the concentrations of reaction invariants of the effluent stream (states) and the feed concentrations (parameters) are estimated online. From the comparison of experiments and simulations, it is found that the states and parameters can efficiently be identified simultaneously with EKF so that the estimated information can be exploited by state-feedback control techniques
