Variation in the effect of seminal plasma on sperm function and fertility has been hypothesised to be due to differences between males and their seminal plasma composition. The freezing resilience of individual rams (n=17) was investigated to characterise inter-male variation. This was determined by measuring the degree of change in motility induced by cryopreservation (Experiment 1). Experiment 2 examined the effect of pooled seminal plasma from rams identified as having high or low resilience to freezing on the cryosurvival of washed spermatozoa from either high (n=3) or low (n=3) sperm freezing resilience rams. Immediately after thawing and throughout the incubation period (0-4h), spermatozoa from high-resilience rams frozen with high-resilience seminal plasma demonstrated superior motility to spermatozoa from high-resilience rams frozen with low-resilience seminal plasma (P<0.001). Similarly, spermatozoa from low-resilience rams frozen with high-resilience seminal plasma exhibited higher motility than spermatozoa from low-resilience rams frozen with low-resilience seminal plasma immediately after thawing (0h; P<0.001). The present study shows that variation in freezing resilience of ram spermatozoa is related to the source and composition of the seminal plasma.

In sheep farms, achieving economic and productive efficiency and sustainability goals is directly related with the reproductive management of the animals. Genetically, the male contribution to the offspring is 50%, but in practical terms, there is a greater potential impact of the ram on reproductive results, because one male has the potential to affect a large group of females and therefore greatly affects the entire flock. Unfortunately, the selection of males for breeding in the US sheep industry has been traditionally conducted based on phenotypical traits, without a genetic/reproductive evaluation, and/or health assessment or records. Therefore, it is important to establish integrative management practices to select the rams and ram lambs to be used in the breeding season. Among these practices are genomic testing, a comprehensive breeding soundness evaluation and assessment of health status and records of the males before the breeding season, to detect and correct potential issues.

Seasonal variation in the reproductive activity of male goats raised under tropical climate conditions

Five Argentine Pampinta (dairy breed) and six Corriedale (dual-purpose breed) adult rams were used to study the effect of season on sexual behavior, plasma testosterone (T) and semen characteristics for a period of 1 year. Scrotal circumference (SC) and T concentrations were determined at 2-week intervals. Each ram was exposed monthly to three ovariectomized ewes in one 20-min test and the total number of mounts and successful matings were recorded. Semen collection was attempted from each ram twice weekly for six co nsecutive weeks during each season. In both breeds, SC varied seasonally showing the lowest mean values during winter and spring and in the Corriedale rams (32.8 ± 0.3 cm) was smaller ( p 0.05) was recorded in T concentration between breeds and both breeds reached a peak in summer and autumn. Number of matings showed the maximal values in autumn in both breeds. Season had no significant effect on mass motility, sperm concentration and percentage of live sperm. Semen volume, percentage of progressive motility and total sperm per ejaculate were higher during summer and autumn than in other seasons of the year. Pampinta rams had thehighest values ( p< 0.05) of sperm concentration, total sperm per ejaculate and percentage of abnormal sperm. Results of this study show that sexual behavior, SC and T concentrations exhibit seasonal variation in Pampinta and Corriedale rams and that semen of superior quantity and quality is especially collected in both breeds during the summer and autumn.
