Jongeren die deel uitmaken van jeugdsubculturen als hip-hop, techno-scene, metal, punk en skinheads, gebruiken vaker drugs, zijn vaker dronken, spijbelen vaker en beginnen eerder aan seks. Roma-jongeren zijn minder vaak dronken. Dat concludeert Daniela Bobakova op basis van een onderzoek onder deze jeugdsubculturen in Slowakije. De resultaten geven ook inzicht in te verwachten gezondheidsproblemen op latere leeftijd. Bobakova stelt dat er nauwelijks onderzoek is gedaan naar de relatie tussen jeugdsubculturen en gedrag dat schadelijk is voor de gezondheid. Het weinige onderzoek dat er is, beperkt zich tot de jongste groep adolescenten. Bobakova verzamelde gegevens onder een groep van 1605 Slowaakse jongeren. Bijna de helft classificeert zichzelf als behorend tot een van de geselecteerde jeugdsubculturen. De promovenda ging vervolgens na wat het verband is tussen deze subculturen en probleemgedrag (drugs- en alcoholgebruik, vechten, spijbelen, lagere schoolprestaties en vroege seksuele initiatie). Ook onderzocht ze de invloed op het gedrag van vrienden en ouders. Ze concludeert onder andere dat er een significant verband bestaat tussen het horen bij een subcultuur en het gebruik van alcohol en drugs (meestal cannabis). Het probleemgedrag is deels te wijten aan weinig toezicht van de ouders. Een uitzondering hierop vormen de Roma, waar het ouderlijk toezicht juist sterker bleek.

Long before Nas proclaimed the death of hip-hop, cultural theorists sounded the death knell for subculture. Qualitative data acquired through fieldwork taken from Chicago’s hip-hop underground scene is used as evidence in the contention made here that the death of hip-hop specifically and subculture more generally is greatly overstated. The first position presented here is that subculture does in fact exist and still has value as a sociological measure. Bennett (1999) argues that subculture is not an objective sociological measure because memberships are fluid and temporary. A primary contention put forth in this article is that membership in subcultures, like hip-hop, are not nearly as fluid as Bennett, Redhead and others would suggest. While Bennett says that subculture mainly consists of “temporal gatherings”, my fieldwork revealed a community of people who were not just temporarily defined by the music but had made it a full-fledge part of their adult identity. Don’t call it a comeback: a full return to hip-hop subculture in Chicago

This paper uses an ethnography of youth gangs in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria to explore the distinctions between being young and being youth and to argue that, in order to understand the complexities of a category whose politics have profoundly influenced the history of contemporary social transitions in many African societies, one must analytically disaggregate its various components and highlight the interesting ways in which various contexts can shape it. There is of course a wide variety of spatial and historical contexts which shape the nature of the experiences that youth have. In this paper, the context of oil extraction and a long history of violent social ruptures in the Niger Delta are used as entry points into understanding how youthhood is framed as well as understood, and how different categories of actors engage with its constantly changing realities.
