GooFit is a thread-parallel, GPU-friendly function evaluation library, nominally designed for use with the maximum likelihood fitting program MINUIT. In this use case, it provides highly parallel calculations of normalization intergrals and log (likelihood) sums. A key feature of the design is its use of the Thrust library to manage all parallel kernel launches. This allows GooFit to execute on any architecture for which Thrust has a backend, currently, including CUDA for nVidia GPUs and OpenMP for single- and multicore CPUs. Running on an nVidia C2050, GooFit executes 300 times more quickly for a complex high energy physics problem than does the prior (algorithmically equivalent) code running on a single CPU core. The design and implementation choices, discussed in detail, can help to guide developers of other highly parallel, compute-intensive libraries.

Implementation of a Thread-Parallel, GPU-Friendly Function Evaluation Library

Simulation studies are performed to assess the sensitivity of a model-independent analysis of the flavour-tagged decays $ {D^0}\to K_{\mathrm{S}}^0{\pi^{+}}{\pi^{-}} $
 and $ {D^0}\to K_{\mathrm{S}}^0{K^{+}}{K^{-}} $
 to mixing and CP violation. The analysis takes as input measurements of the D decay strong-phase parameters that are accessible in quantum-correlated $ D-\overline{D} $
 pairs produced at the ψ(3770) resonance. It is shown that the model-independent approach is well suited to the very large data sets expected at an upgraded LHCb experiment, or future high luminosity e
 +
 e
 − facility, and that with 100M $ K_{\mathrm{S}}^0{\pi^{+}}{\pi^{-}} $
 decays a statistical precision of around 0.01 and 0.7° is achievable on the CP violation parameters r
 CP
 and α
 CP
 , respectively. Even with this very large sample the systematic uncertainties associated with the strong-phase parameters will not be limiting, assuming that full use is made of the available ψ(3770) data sets of CLEO-c and BES-III. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that large flavour-tagged samples can themselves be exploited to provide information on the strong-phase parameters, a feature that will be beneficial in the measurement of the CKM angle γ/ϕ
 3 with B
 − → DK
 − decays.

Model-independent $ {D^0}-{{\overline{D}}^0} $ mixing and CP violation studies with $ {D^0}\to K_{\mathrm{S}}^0{\pi^{+}}{\pi^{-}} $ and $ {D^0}\to K_{\mathrm{S}}^0{K^{+}}{K^{-}} $

We report a direct measurement of D{sup 0}-{bar D}{sup 0} mixing parameters through a time-dependent amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plots of D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} and, for the first time, D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}K{sup +}K{sup -} decays. The low-momentum pion {pi}{sub s}{sup +} in the decay D*{sup +} {yields} D{sup 0}{pi}{sub s}{sup +} identifies the flavor of the neutral D meson at its production. Using 468.5 fb{sup -1} of e{sup +}e{sup -} colliding-beam data recorded near {radical}s = 10.6 GeV by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy collider at SLAC, we measure the mixing parameters x = [1.6 {+-} 2.3 (stat.) {+-} 1.2 (syst.) {+-} 0.8 (model)] x 10{sup -3}, and y = [5.7 {+-} 2.0 (stat.) {+-} 1.3 (syst.) {+-} 0.7 (model)] x 10{sup -3}. These results provide the best measurement to date of x and y. The knowledge of the value of x, in particular, is crucial for understanding the origin of mixing.
