Neutron differential elastic- and inelastic-scattering cross sections are measured from approximately=1.5 to 10 MeV with the detail necessary to define the energy-averaged behaviour of the scattering processes. Neutrons corresponding to excitations of 465+or-23, 737+or-20, 1017+or-34, 1251+or-20, 1432+or-23 and 1692+or-25 keV are observed. It is shown that the observables are reasonably described with a conventional optical-statistical model having energy-dependent geometric parameters. These model parameters are consistent with systematic behaviours previously reported from this laboratory. The energy dependencies are alleviated when the model is extended to include the contributions of the dispersion relationship. There is no indication of anomalous behaviour of the neutron interaction with 45Sc, five nucleons from the doubly closed shell at 40Ca.

Fast-neutron scattering near shell closures: scandium

Differential neutron elastic-scattering cross sections of elemental chromium are measured from 4.5 {approx} 10 MeV in steps of {approx} 0.5 MeV and at {ge} 40 scattering angles distributed between {approx} 17{degree}--160{degree}. Concurrently differential cross sections for the inelastic neutron excitation of the yrast 2{sup +} (1.434 MeV) level in {sup d52}Cr are determined. In addition, broad inelastically-scattered neutron groups are observed corresponding to composite excitation of levels up to {approx} 5.5 MeV in the various chromium isotopes. These experimental results are combined with low-energy values previously reported from this laboratory, with recent {approx} 8 {yields} 15 MeV data measured at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt and with a 21.6 MeV result from the literature to form an extensive neutron-scattering data base which is interpreted in the context of spherical-optical and coupled-channels (rotational and vibrational) models. These models reasonably describe the observables but indicate rather large energy-dependent parameter trends at low energies similar to those previously reported near the peak of the S{sub o} strength function in studies at this laboratory. The physical implications of the measurements and models are discussed including deformation, coupling, dispersive and asymmetry effects.

Neutron scattering and models: Chromium

Many different configurations of electronics and semiconductor strip detectors were studied in 1995 using the ATLAS tracking detector test area at the H8 beam-line of the CERN SPS. A significant fraction of these investigations are presented elsewhere in this volume and this paper will concentrate on the results with silicon strip detectors read out with electronics preserving the pulse height information. Data has been collected with the ADAM, APV5 and FElix read-out chips on a number of different detectors. The first results are presented for read out with LHC electronics of detectors to the ATLAS-A specification of 112.5 μm pitch, employing n-strips in n-type silicon, capacitive coupling and intermediate strips. It is demonstrated that with adequate signal/noise, a spatial resolution of ⋍13 μm is attainable with these detectors.

Differential neutron elastic-scattering cross sections of elemental titanium were measured from 4.5 to 10.0 MeV in incident-energy increments of and at forty or more scattering angles distributed between and degrees. Concurrently, differential neutron inelastic-scattering cross sections were measured for observed excitations of , , , , , and . All of the observed inelastic neutron groups were composites of contributions from several isotopes and/or levels. The experimental results were used to develop energy-average optical, statistical and coupled-channels models.

Fast neutrons incident on titanium

Neutron differential elastic- and inelastic-scattering cross sections of 103Rh are measured for incident energies of approximately 1.5 to 10 MeV. The measurements are made with sufficient detail to well define the energy-averaged behaviour of the elastic-scattering process. Neutrons corresponding to excitations of groups of levels at 334+or-13, 536+or-10, 648+or-25, 796+or-20, 864+or-22, 1120+or-22, 1279+or-60, 1481+or-27 and 1683+or-39 keV are observed and the corresponding cross sections determined. Assuming the target nucleus is reasonably approximated by a simple one-phonon vibrator, spherical-optical, dispersive-optical, and coupled-channels models are deduced from the data base. Physical aspects of these models are compared with theoretical predictions and the systematics of similar model parametrizations in this mass-energy region.

Fast-neutron scattering from vibrational nuclei: 103Rh

The purpose of the RD2 project is to evaluate the feasibility of a silicon tracker and/or preshower detector for LHC. Irradiation studies with doses equivalent to those expected at LHC have been performed to determine the behavior of operational parameters such as leakage current, depletion voltage and charge collection during the life of the detector. The development of fast, dense, low power and low cost signal processing electronics is one of the major activities of the collaboration. We describe the first fully functional integrated analog memory chip with asynchronous read and write operations and level 1 trigger capture capabilities. A complete test beam system using this analog memory chip at 66 MHz has been successfully operated with RD2 prototype silicon detectors during various test runs. The flexibility of the electronics and readout have allowed us to easily interface our set-up to other data acquistion systems. Mechanical studies are in progress to design a silicon tracking detector with several million channels that may be operated at low (0–10°C) temperature, while maintaining the required geometrical precision. Prototype readout boards for such a detector are being developed and simulation studies are being performed to optimize the readout architecture.
